Just an update. Doc said he will set up an MRI, and a Dye test for his heart to look for regurgitation (sp). Please continue to pray for this little guy, and his momma too.

    Thanks,
    Casey

I had a bicuspid valve that wasn't replaced until it pooped out when I was 42 years old. that was 12 years ago. I lead a normal childhood playing baseball and football, even baseball through college and after I went to work. Looking back, I got tired a little quicker than other kids, but wasn't a major impediment. The antibiotics before dental work is a good idea. Key is to keep monitoring it. I waited a little long to have mine done and ended up with permanent damage from the thickening of the left wall from all the extra work that the heart had to do. You will know when it is time when he can't breather after moderate exertion. As my doctor told me, this is one of the problems that can be fixed. Barbara Bush, Robin Williams, Arnold Swarzenegger, Aaron Boone have all had their aortic valves replaced.

good luck and good on you for discovering it so soon.

Thank you sir. It is uplifting to hear some positive stories about this.

The aortic valve normally has 3 leaflets or flaps that open and close together to make a valve. A bicuspid valve means that you only have 2 leaflets making up the valve instead of 3. This happens in about 1% of the population. It doen't neceassarily mean a whole lot. If the valve has regurgitation which means it leaks blood backward then it sometimes become a problem. It probably won't become an issue until a person is older and maybe develops high blood pressure. The heart pumping against the higher pressure can then make the valve leak more. If the valve gets bad enough it would then be replaced by either a mechanical or organic valve. The organic ones usually come from pigs. The decision usually depends on how old the person is. The mechanical valves will last longer than the organic ones, but you have to take blood thinners for life with a mechanical valve. You'll know more once they get all your test results back to see how bad the regurgitation is. It doesn't necessarily mean that he won't be able to play baseball. I'm not a cardiologist but let me know if you have any more questions.

My Dad had his replaced at 65. Both before and after he is a hard working son of a gun.
