    Your view on resignations.

    Sorry, Smart ... another non-hunting related thread ... just hit that little arrow pointing left!

    Even though most employers will let you go at the drop of a hat, they still expect you to give them two weeks notice. This morning, our business development manager gave notice. An hour later, she came by my office and said "they" just told her to leave, now!

    What gives?
    Do you give two weeks and risk them running you off that day and being out two weeks pay?
    Maybe give one week notice to cut the risk in half, and explain your concern?
    Or just quit?

    no take 3weeks of vacation, and then come in and give notice you are leaving..thats what the last 4people did in our office....

      Depends on the situation. Most firms where you deal with customers or sensitive information will ask you to leave right then. Some will escort you out with security to make sure you don't steal info.

      I still say give them a "2 week" notice, but be prepared to be asked to leave then and there. When you give them 2 weeks, they will usually still pay you for that 2 weeks. They just don't want you around to steal clients or info or drag down the morale of the others. Or take other employees with you.

      When you decide to resign, make sure you have all the info you need from your work space. Phone numbers, emails, etc. Just don't get stupid and "steal" anything that could end up in a lawsuit with your former employer.

        Heck, if I am leaving because I do not like my place of work, then I just leave. If I respect them and am moving into a better job, then I give notice.

          This. Very good advice. Use 100% of your vacation and sick days prior to your notice.

            I would give two weeks notice if I had any respect for the people running the joint, and I wanted to leave on good terms. That being said, I have worked for the most crooked, lying, piece of cow dookie there ever was. One day I got the short end of the stick (again), and that was my last day. No regrets about that one.

              Even if they walk you same day, they will pay you for the notice time, and any accrued vacation time. In todays world, it is safer to escort them out, rather than worry about what is being downloaded, like mailing lists and what not, or what might be loaded on to systems, like viruses and the such. Much less risk involved for the company that way, and the former employee will still have a positive release, rather than quitting.

                That is always a tough question. Depending upon the company and your level (at least in my experience) if they let you go they may pay you for the 2 weeks. If not you are screwed so make sure you can afford 2 weeks off if you do give notice...

                  one girl here was just asked to leave, they wanted her to resign so they did not have to pay her unemployment....

                  me, I agree with several comments above....If I am not happy, they may or may not get two weeks or any notice..I will use as much vacation/sick time as I can before pulling the trigger....

                    I wouldn't give two weeks notice unless I was planning on them coming back and asking me to leave immediately, especially if I was going to work for a competitor. However, I think most HR departments give prospective employers an indication of whether the person left with notice or not. I gave about ten minutes notice at my last job, but the company isn't in business anymore, so I don't think it is a problem.

                      One question I always ask a former employer is did they give notice. I appreciate the 2 week notice, and need that time to feel the position. I guess it is a risk the employee takes, but if they don't, they are not eligible for rehire. Also that is a question many many companies ask me when checking a app or resume.

                      I have never let anyone leave that day that gave notice, but if I did, I would pay them the two weeks.

                      My wife had the same thing happen to her, and I know it was because they didn't want their/her customers to know where she was going. It hurt her feelings a little, but I understand why they did it.

                        Tell your new employer your giving your current employer a two weeks notice aand if they choose to let you go can I start earlier.

                          doesnt make sense about security escorting you out, because if you wanted that information that bad you would get it before you quit...if you plan on quitting but then want the info then get the info the next day and quit a day later.

                          I have never done it or had information I even thought about wanting but that just makes no sense to me. I have given 2 weeks usually.

                            It's small world, and you never know who you might need in the future. Never burn a bridge. Sometimes it sucks, but it's better to give two weeks notice and "do the right thing". If the employer decides to let you go sooner, that's their prerogative. Sometimes the emplyer is fearful an employer will do some sabotage, etc. during their two weeks. And, some employees do sabotage during their last two weeks. If you give two weeks notice, the employer is required to pay you for that time, plus any accrued but unused vacation.

                            Now, depending on the employer, actually getting paid for the two weeks is different matter altogether.
