    Interesting Thread find

Now knowing that the BP well is slowly killing the gulf, and LA shores, i decided to search here for a thread I remembered reading a while back. It seems at some point we were all for drilling more well, poking more holes in the ground, and sucking the oil out to keep fuel prices down. I think this was when gas was at an all time high, or near then time wise, and the economy was really starting to tank.

Now that we know what we do about the potential hazards, and how unless BP stops this leak soon, we are all in for a horrible devastation, have we rethought our position on knocking holes in the ground?? Hopefully this doesn't rub anyone the wrong way, or offend anyone, as that is not how this thread is intended to go. I just hope it makes us think we could possibly stand to slow down a bit, and get it right the first time, and maybe realize that there are consuquences to our actions.

The sad thing is....we dont have to drill in deep water.......there is plenty on oil in shallow water and on dry land......wanna take a guess who wont let them drill there?

Not really debating where it is at, or if we should or shouldn't drill for it. Just thinking be careful what we wish for.

Nope, haven't changed my mind. Do it safely, properly, and dont take chances, and youre good. BP gambled on saving money and lost.

I dont think we should stop or slow down at all, if anything, this spill is going to set people to work to improve the process.
bp was negligent, in this case, but it has been the only major gulf spill in a bunch of years, how many successful wells have been drilled?

I'm also going to throw myself in and say i wish the government, would either step in and take over for bp, or step out and let bp do the work....... With the feds the way they are nobody can get anything done right now

                    Still all for drilling.
                    This spill didn't change that.

This!! Cheaper and SAFER to drill in shallow water. I don't know the answer but I'm guessing the way the tides spread any spill, the environmental impact of a spill shallow water would be no worse than one in deep water?

If anyone with actual knowledge on such things could share I'd be interested.

Personally I think a spill in shallow water would be easier to stop leaking than in deep water. or at least that is what BP would have us to believe, since there has never been this type of catastrophy in either shallow or deep water. And yes BP may have sacrificed safety for profit, and that is yet to be determined. Either way, we will all pay the price.

What I don't get is how they can fine some domestic drillers on dry land when they spill 100 gallons of oil on the ground and then the government goes and spreads oil all over the black top and chalk roads. Does any one know if it is a different kind of oil or what makes it safer for the enviroment???

You only hear about the bad stuff. This is a horrible thing, and will affect many people for years and years to come. Stopping drilling for oil does nothing but make us more dependant on other countries, who in many cases want america to fail. The media talks like this sort of thing will happen every time a well is drilled. There are an amazing number of platforms in the gulf, and I haven't heard of an issue like this in my lifetime.
