    GPS question

I have wanted to buy a GPS for outdoor activities, but I have to get approval from the home financial advisor. I want to use it to mark secret stand locations, honey hole fishing spots, etc. Here is my question, I have an iPhone and have seen the GPS apps that are available; for those of you that have used the app and a true GPS (Garmin, Magellan, etc.), are there enough differences in the capabilities to justify the expense? A good friend of mine swears by his iPhone app but it looks to be very limited.

For ruggedness (ability to use it while raining, misting, damp, etc., and also for the ability to download locations to maps, I would recommend getting at least a very basic Garmin GPS, which will cost no more than $100.

the GPS apps for phones don't work that well in the woods

it is better to have a Garmin with the external antenna that is designed to be used in the woods

      > here's a used one on the Dallas Craigslist for a good price

CaptJack, thanks for the info. Looks like I need to make a phone call.

If the phone does not have connectivity to the network, I do not believe the GPS works. The baseband processor does not process the signals to a location, but to some other format that needs to be processed by the cellular provider. At least that's how my RAZR's GPS works.

A Garmin etrex (little yellow model) can be bought for well below $100 and will do what you need.
