I live in Dallas. About 5 (or was it 10) years ago, I started noticing some dove or pigeon calls in my neighborhood that I wasn't familiar with. I've been hearing Mourning Doves coo all my life, but this was different. At first I thought it was just pigeons, until one day when I was out for a walk, I found (dead) what was unmistakably a Whitewing Dove.
Since that time I see more and more of them around here. Usually I dove hunt in Oklahoma (no Whitewings there yet), but last year I hunted just north of Denton. Half of my limit was Whitewings.
I remember when I was kid (late 50's/early 60's) that the only place in Texas you could hunt Whitewings was in the Valley (my recollection, I certainly could be wrong). I'm not sure, but it seems like they even resticted bag limits on Whitewings for a while because they were getting scarce.
What happened? Have the birds just been gradually expanding their range northward? I've NEVER hunted south of Dallas, always north and east. So I naturally wouldn't have been aware of any gradual northward expansion.
Or did the birds suddenly begin a northward movement for some unknown reason?
Whatever the reason, I'm glad. They're just as much fun as Mourning Doves, and a little more meat too. They do take a little more killing though.
One other thing. I keep hearing about Collared Doves. Anyone have any experience with them?
