What a horrible way to start the day!

I am lucky to be able to spend my days on county and back roads, so I see hundreds of deer every day. Unfortunately this morning I saw one I wish I hadn't. As many do, he tried to clear five strands and got twisted up in the top two. I actually passed him and said a little prayer and moved on down the road. After about 100 yards, I realized that just because he didn't move he may still be alive. So with crow bars and rocks for wedges I was able to free his leg. All that to find out his hip was dislocated and coyotes had already got part of his hindquarter. I knew the warrant was signed. I called the Game Warden for assistance. He asked me if I "had a method to dispatch the animal". I told him I did, but would prefer not to if he was in route. He was on his way, about 30 minutes away. So I rolled on down the road. My thought was that out of respect for the animal, I did not want to be his executioner. Now I'm wrestling with the question that maybe I should have put him out of his misery out of respect. I have had to do it before when Game Wardens were hours away, if available at all knowing I was the only one to hand down the mercy. I guess I'm getting soft.

Good job. I've put down a few. I don't like to see an animal suffer.

Seen it many times and put a few down myself.

Me personally, if the warden gave the "OK" I couldn't have left with the deer still alive and hanging in the fence. I say this from exp. as I have had one tell me "I am right down the road....." and show up over an hour later.

Good job. That is a tough one. Where was PETA? Should have called them.

My lease partner drove up on the same situation leaving our ranch ,just as it happened. He saw four deer cross the road ahead of him.And the last one,a small buck must have slipped in the mud trying to clear the fence. He was able to free the deer without getting kicked. He said the deer ran out about 100 yards stopped ,turned and looked back as if he was saying thanks!I have found them in much worse shape.

Dang, sorry to hear that. I think I would have to have taken care of it. No telling how long or even if the warden might have shown up.
