Although it is rare, I have seen a few black fox squirrels here in east Texas. I saw a really beautiful one on my bike ride today. Are the melanistic red fox squirrels, or are they a separate species?
I've never seen them in Texas but I worked a project in Ontario a couple of years ago and all they had were black squirrels. They looked just like regular squirrels but had jet black fur.
I've always been told they were just a different color variation of a fox squirrel. We've encountered a few isolated populations of them throughout East Texas over the years. The last pocket of them we found was along a creek bed in Tyler County.
I have seen three black fox squirrels in my lifetime. They really stand out running with the other fox squirrels. I have a cousins that mounted one and I left one in the freezer too long I had planned to mount. These were seen or harvested in Walker,Grimes, and Madison county's.
We have a black melanistic fox squirrel that hangs around by my stand........He has been there the past few seasons.......There are also a couple black cat squirrels that I saw from a stand on the other side of lease......I shot a black fox squirrel about 20 years ago on my grandpaws place.......I have heard that it is more common that cat squirrels are melanistic........But I don't really know.......
