How do you kill johnson grass?

Moved into a new house with a horrible yard. i killed all the weeds with "connect to hose" spray stuff. that worked great. All that is left is st. augustine and johnson grass. i would really like an easy way to get rid of the johnson grass. i would rather dirt than that stuff. this is what it looks like.

You don't!!!! Just kidding hard stuff to get rid of, best way is to get the round up out and spot sray and even at that may have to do it a couple times. And yes you will have bare spots then let the st. agutine grow back in.

Thats a tough one farmers been trying to get rid of it forever.

Dont pull it up by hand it has rhizomes and itll only get worse. Id spot spray with a full rate of glyphosate.

Roundup will knock it back to the ground in the summer but won't completely kill it. Your best bet for a full kill will be in the fall right before frost...you have a much better shot at killing the rhizomes then.

MSMA will kill the St A grass also. If you want to spray the entire yard use Trimec Southern. It is St A safe and kills weeds.

THIS, or something w/ MSMA in it. Image. or Portrait, something like that. MSMA products will kill unwanted grasses. Johnson grass, dallis grass, etc. You'll need to use 3 -4 times a year. I'm not aware of anything will permanently kill johnson grass, or any other grass for that matter. Good luck...

I missed the St Aug in his sentence, Sorry. Yes MSMA will kill the St.A grass but will not kill Bermuda.

Maverick will kill johnson grass and does not kill burmuda grass. You could try it in a small part of your yard and see if it kills your st augustine. If that doesn't work you can rope wick it with Maverick or round up.

Wait until next spring and put down pre emergent in Feb. The Johnson grass comes back every year from seed, and this will stop it. Must be put down BEFORE the soil hits germination temp.

What he said for next year, but to spot treat now, you can get Round up, Image or MSMA or other and mix it strong. Put on those heavy rubber gloves like they use in chemical environments and put some cloth light canvas gloves on over those. Dip your glove covered hands and then wipe the grass you want to take out generously untill all the green surface has been wetted. This will help minimize damage to the St.A grass, but will give maximum coverage to the unwanted grass... works for just about any unwanted green plant and is much more selective than any kind of "spraying"... just put the stuff on what you want to kill with no overspray.
