    Help Selecting New Video Camera...

I've posted in the "It's all about the video" section with no response, so pardon if I'm posting in the wrong area.

I have researched new video cameras for about 3 months and think I have it narrowed down to the Sony DCR-HC7 or the Panasonic PV-GS500. I don't really want to spend over $1k. Any advice before I make this purchase? Anyone... Please!!

I'm no expert by a long shot but I have been very pleased with the 2 sony's I have had.

I've got 2 Sony 480's and like them alot. I tape for me, and not professionally, so I'm not interested in the upper end cameras. I'll probably use them until they crap out, but I've been looking at the Sony harddrive camera that has the 40x optical zoom. It's small and has my interest peaked. Has anyone used any of the Hard drive cams?

I looked at the sony hard drives but got some info that a mini dv would be better for transfering/editing video. Both cameras I mention above are mini dv.

I've looked into the same Panasonic. I own two Sonys but the 3 CCD on the Panasonic draws me to it.

I bought a new Sony DCR-DVD108 last month after two or so months of researching and the help from KingsX. And I am very happy with it. I would suggest a DVD camera with USB and AV out. That way you can down load to your computer or view it on your tv. Also make sure the camera comes with the editing software and will record on the - Rw and or Ram Dvd. I believe those two are the only Dvds you can edit off of from your camera. You may already know all of this info, but I hope this helps.

                      KC Huntin,

I bought the Panasonic 500 last year before the season. I've been fairly pleased, after using Sonys for years. Bang for the buck, I think it was the best deal I could find for low light and resolution. It does, on occassion, make a slight whining noise while recording. It's periodic and sounds like the gears are grinding, but could just be my particular unit. I purchased it from BH Photo for under $900. Good Luck!
