    Why cant

Everyone lets think about this for a minute or two. Why cant a wild hog grow to 1000 pounds? In my honest opinion a wild/feral hog will hardly go much over 600 pounds. I am not saying it cant or wont happen and here is why.
A feral boar does a few things that make us men almost want to be pigs, they eat and they fight and they try to have sex. In doing this they move alot they run and they get alot of excercise. A male boar does simular to a buck in marking his territory and his rubs and wallows. He generally will be a loner unless a sow is in heat. If you see a big boar with a sounder of hogs its because there is a sow thats in eat. Now a feral hog thats been wormed and put in a small pen can grow big but usually will not get much over 500 pounds and thats with no exercise. And this can take years. I know Kevin used to raise some trophy boars and he had some very nice ones and they were fed good, and I never saw them get over 400 pounds. So if a boar in the wild is making his rounds, eating and marking he is on the move.
This said how can a big boar like the kid shot get so big, well they are all over the country, places like Owens and Jimmy Dean have breeders for their meat, they want a big healthy pig for butcher. They want it fast. They want to pay the least amount for the most profit. So if a litter of non wild hogs was 8 piglets..4 boars and for sows. Do you keep all four boars, no you cut them and grow them. Now you cant cut all of them becase you need the sperm to still have pigs. So in a pen by himself is a big stud boar, he is there for one purpose to breed,he eats daily and only gets exercise when the sows are in heat and he is not in battle for the sow and doesnt have to chase her acroos the county and fight others off for her to give in. So he breeds and ho gets fed and wormed and injected with hormones to increase the hogs weight and size. Well he then gets to big to breed he is hurting sows and his weight is enormous..you cant cut him because he is to old and it will then kill him ,you cant eat him,so what do you do,You try and sell him.
He gets sold for a whopping 6 cents a pound or so to a highfence ranch. I am not against high fence ranches at all so dont take me wrong,,I dont think that any that I sell pigs to have done this. Now you take a place like Alabama who doesnt know a wild hog from a potbelly and wouulllaaa you got a big hog to hunt. Alabamas hog population is nothing compared to Texas and its illegal to move and release them.so see what I am saying.
I had this on my mind since the story first came out so I am giving what I know and have seen.Any questions I will try and help or answer.

Industry standard on fat hogs is now about 250-280 pounds live hog weight they dont use monsters like that for food. way to much boar taint.

We have a Hamp boar that is every bit as big with just as big cutters as that hog had. He broke out of his pen for a couple of weeks and all he wanted to do was ride the barrels we had laying around and he lost lots of weight real quick. I can underdstnad completely what you are saying. I don't have any pics where I am at now or I would show you.

I think any hog that has to fend for itself on the move and worry about predators (even if man is his only predator) can't possibly get much over 300-400#s...and that's a BIG wild hog.

If they got much bigger in the wild, Howie would've killed one last month!

For one to reach that weight they can't be very active and must have an ABUNDANT food source right next to it's bedding area...aka, someone throwing a LOT of feed/slop into his pen a couple of times a day.

Well. I have no problems with anyone shooting a hog bigger than mine,,I dont hold a single record in the wwt but that said ,it wasnt out there or I didnt know about it when I shot a few good ones, but I just want my friends here to know and think, Texas has more hogs than any state. Many are huge many are spotted. The strand I have around my area seem to get very big..I have caught some very good hogs as well as shot more than Howie lol. Everytime we see one of these so called monster hogs,,there is something wrong. I promise to my friends here and other site that I am admin on I will post an honest pic and always try to have a scale weight in the pic.

I could see a cut boar reaching over #400 but not the weight mentioned. and in those pics you can see conjones on the hog. The cut boar does almost everything we would want to do except for the most fun part

                    Gentleman,

There are plenty of 400# hogs running around. It's like 130" deer. They are there, but you gotta find them. I'm not saying if this particular story is true or not, but if you don't think pigs outweigh deer, you need to think twice. Texas has a ton of hogs, but that doesn't mean they're the biggest. Relatively speaking, there's alot less swampland and bottomland around here, than the deep South. Can you doctor polaroids? I'm not sure, but everyone should check out the picture at the gas station in Caddo(assuming the picture is still there). This is a bowkill and I can promise you that pig weighed in the vicinity of 700 whoppers. Think about it, the average man weighs less than 200 lbs. and yet there are 1,200 lb people. Also, pigs don't get "exercise"(except maybe brief periods while sows are in heat) during the summer around here. They can't sweat and they lay up about 20 hrs. a day. They only move in the absolute coolest parts of the morning as a general rule. This goes on for atleast 5 months. They are GLUTTONS!!!!! Just remember, they were wild pigs before they were domestic pigs.

While running a risk of being redundant heres a photo of a fat pig:

                      I weigh 200 pounds.

Why is it so difficult to believe? Bear get that big. So do other animals. Most of the hogs we kill are the young stuff.

I'd still like to see one in person. Those we raised in a sty were big, but no more than 3-400 pounds. I'm not going to say is or is not based on a picture.

I'm by no means a hog expert, although I do cook a bunch of sausage and bacon each morning at my store...but I think it is a real LONGSHOT of hog getting that big in the wild. I hope I am not correct but it is looking like the boys dad wanted him to get some "hunting" recognition. The boy probably didn't know the hog was "released" but I bet if his dad or even someone else that stands to profit comes forward we will know the "rest of the story".

Can you explain the distance a hog travels during studies it shows they have moved up to 9 miles a night, A&M has done extensive research to hog movement. I myself have taken hog's 15 miles from where I trapped them and they showed back up 2 days later. Even in the summer hogs will move numerous times a day to wallow. Hogs movement also has alot more to do with the moon phase then most people think.

eradicator-I assure you there are far more 130" bucks running around then 400# hogs.

How many true #400 WILD boars have you shot? I'm talking 400# on the scale. So many people shoot a 200-250lb boar and think it weighs 400#.

Hogs will surprise you on the scale.
