    Opinions on a 45-70?

Won a 45-70 in a raffle a few weeks ago and wanted to know yalls opinion on the caliber. Thought about selling but want to know if I should keep to throw in the truck for an extra pig killer.

It's a pig killer alright. If you're recoil sensitive you'll not like that caliber too much. Ballistics are about like a catapult throwing a volkswagon but, there is a ton of knock down energy inside 150 yards.

In my marlin the remington loads aren't that bad on recoil but you can definitly feel the hornady loads. It makes for a great pig killer

I've got a Marlin, lever action, 45-70 and I love it. I shot a deer with it and it looked like I threw a softball through the animal. It picked up the 6 point and dropped him about 3 feet back from where he was standing; so be careful where you put the shot. It will shoot through trees, cars, trucks, walls, and pretty much anything else you point it at; so, know what is down range. I have shot just about every kind of ammo out there, but my favorite is the 325gr, Hornady, FTX bullet. Great ballistics and you get a little more range out of it. I am comfortable to 200 yards with my rifle and this load. You can shoot it out to 500 yards, but you have to hold 25 feet over. Excellent brush gun and will stop anything you come across. A Pacmyer (spelling?) recoil pad should be your first investment as the factory pad leaves much to be desired. I put one on my rifle and the recoil went from insane to almost managable. The best thing is: When you pull it out of the case or your truck, the reaction other hunters give you is priceless. It never fails for someone to ask me, "What are you going to shoot with that thing!?" My resonse is always the same, "Anything on the other end of the muzzle." I really enjoy shooting mine. I think you should keep it; but if you don't, let me know. I would be interested in aquiring another.

I have had 4 different Buffalo Guns 3(Umberti,Taylor,1874 Sharps Repo) old style one Marlin Guide Gun to me the 45/70 kick is not much I kept the Marlin in the truck at the ranch for Pigs and Yotes (NO SCOPE) the Remingtons in the 200-300 gr arent bad But if u want some fun, get the 405gr. Remington and find a metal T-Post and u can cut the thing in half.I have shot a deer(It was wounded by another Hunter) with them but after doing so (Gutting Process) I wish I hadnt...VERY MESSY ....But that being said if u hit a pig running ANYWHERE it will knock it around enuff to make a second killing shot...I shot a 200 lb+ Sow running away from me on the Ranch out of the Blazer and it hit her Right ham flipped her and came out in front of her left shoulder and turned her into Jelly on the inside..I think with the new Hornady loads the can take anything at a reasonable distance I just liked throwing the 405gr SoftBall size loads out of mine cause it was open sighted and all my shots were 75yd or less.JMO

45-70 is a hoot and a ton of fun to shoot. When it goes bang, things dont keep running!

I have a marlin 1895 in 45/70. Can't go wrong with that caliber on any large game in North America for sure!!! I shoot the Hornady leverevolution ammo and it does what it says out to 200 yards.

I didn't think the recoil was too bad...

Great gun out to 200 yards! The NEw LeverEvolution ammo helps alot with accuracy and extends the range some

I have one the older Marlin's inherited from my grandfather. Like said before, the lighter bullet weight Remington's aren't so bad to shoot to me, certainly not any worse than my 670 w/o recoil pad. I have heard the heavier you go, the worse it gets though..

One of the few firearms still legal in Cali- ship to me- with 200 pages of documents.

I have a 450 Marlin (a 45-70 on steroids) and with the ported barrel it does not raise when shooting, and the recoil is closer to a 12 gauge slug gun. Shooting 2 boxes of 20 in a T shirt will give you a black and blue shoulder a couple days later I learned.

                            Definitely a hog killer.

I don't think they have any recoil but I'm not really a softy either

Its a great gun and I wish I had not sold mine to my Dad.. Its a novelty to shoot big game with one..

And they don't call it a buffalo gun for nothing
