Transferring Title and Registration from Another State

I purchased a travel trailer from someone in Oklahoma. I have a the original Certificate of Title from the State of Oklahoma. The seller has filled out the Assignment of Title by Registered Owner section, listing me as the buyer and him as the seller. He has signed it and has his signature notarized. Additionally, he has provided me with a Lien Holders Release Form from the State of Oklahoma Tax Commision, indicating that the original lien holder, Bank of America, has been paid off and that their lien has been released. The trailer is registered in Oklahoma and has an Oklahoma license plate.

I would like to have the trailer titled to me in the State of Texas and have it registered in Texas with a Texas license plate. Is all of this done through my County Tax Assessor's Office? And is there anything additional that I will need to bring with me? I have tried to talk with someone on the phone, but they are apparently too busy. And I'd rather not go down there in person until I'm sure I have everything I need and am going to the right place. I figure one of you probably already knows how this is done. Thanks in advance!

I believe that you have to do all of that through the DMV.

I assume a travel trailer would be the same as a regular trailer. I bought a trailer from a TBHer in OK and went to the county tax office today to have the title transferred into my name and get a new registration sticker. I gave them a handwritten bill of sale and the registration renewal notice I had from the seller. Got it all done in about 15 minutes. Had to fill out a form with sellers info, my info, and description of the trailer. Might have helped that the trailer was still registered in TX.

They did make me pay sales tax The lady said since I lived in TX and was registering the trailer in TX I had to pay it even though I bought the trailer in OK

Sounds like you have plenty of documentation to get it done

It is done through the DMV. I hate bring things into the state. Texas laws are weird compared to other states. Take everything with you.

I bought a boat out of state and you would have thought I was bring a nuclear weapon into the state. The state I bought it from only titled the boat and the trailer. Texas titles the boat, the motor and the trailer. They did not know what to do. It took 4-5 trips to the DMV, me getting mad and a supporvisor to figure things out.

I should have known it couldn't be easy! I just got a call back from someone at the County Tax Office. In addition to the two pieces of paperwork I already have, I also have to bring a weight certification (because Oklahoma doesn't print the weight on the title) and a form VI-30. Then I have to take all that to the County Tax Office, where they can both transfer the title and register my trailer.

She said Form VI-30 is a form for out-of-state motorized and non-motorized vehicles that is issued after a safety inspection and VIN verification by a DPS inspection station. And that I could take the trailer to any DPS inspection station that does trailer certificates (not all of them do) to get a certified VI-30.

She said I could take the trailer to a truck stop that has certified scales and have it weighed to get a weight certificate.

Darn, I really didn't want to have to hook up to and tow the trailer just to get this done! Oh well, at least now I know.
