    Perennial rye or fescue?

My backyard is I would say medium to heavily shaded and I'm about to reseed. I can't afford St. Augustine sod. Which seed would be better for North Texas perennial rye or fescue?

I was under the impression that rye grass was more of a cool season grass.

Fescue seed is pretty cheep...........I planted some last year and this year with some success under heavy shade trees. Just have to keep the ground moist for 7-10 days while the seeds germinate........ie - water twice a day.

I was to, but the bag said drought resistant. It is a rye grass Bermuda mix. How did the fescue do? Does it look decent?

It may be drought resistant but rye or fescues will die in July and August. Can't handle the heat.

I northern california the rye grass would start growing in nov. and always burned up about the second week of June. weeks earlier the further south you travel. I wouldn't trust it here, except in the winter. Mike, check out seedsource.com they have native grass seeds for your region. I am going to plant my front yard 1/3 acre with their shade-friendly mix. have you killed a tom yet??

My fescue did fine last year but I stayed on top of the watering.

Will an inch a week keep it alive?

just plant some type of ground cover like asian jasmine in real shady areas. it will thrive and be easier in the long run.... St. Augustine still needs some several hours of sunlight to grow.

Too many copperheads for ground cover. I guess I'm going to go with fescue.

I planted Fescue and 95% came up after 6 days. Now we have not had rain in 6 days. Going to be tough to keep it alive.
