    Building my own humidor

I have been looking at humidors for quite some time now and have yet to find one that is exactly what I want so my wife suggested I build my own. My wife's grandfather builds custom mesquite furniture and mills all his own lumber so I figured structuraly he can help make it look nice. I have found plenty of plans and suppliers for the hardware and Spanish cedar so that is covered. Basically I will be building a 100 cigar humidors out of mesquite. After this I am open to suggestions on design or additions to it. I want to do it right the first time so give me all the suggestions you have.

I've been thinking about this for some time now, but haven't started the project becuase of "paralysis by analysis". Going to be watching this thread closely for any tips and tricks.

Anyway, if you're wanting some design inspiration, do a search on "humidor" over on sawmillcreek.org. Those guys have been making some absolutely incredible looking ones lately.

I'm guessing you are going to line it with the Spanish Cedar? Please post photos of the process and final product.

That's awesome! I built one in a shop class I took in college. I lined it with spanish cedar (oh it smells so good) and the rest out of mesquite. It'll hold around 20-30 cigars for the size I made it. If your interested, I can post a pic of mine.

Yes it will be lined with Spanish cedar. I am also contemplating buying Spanish cedar trays and just building the box itself as I have heard that the cedar is hard to work with. I would appreciate pictures as well of the one you built.

I also added two magnets in the lid for a tighter fit.

VERY NICE!!!! That is exactly why I want to build my own. You can't buy anything that has the character that mesquite does. You don't have any pictures of the inside do you? Do you have a hard time keeping the humidity at a constant level or does it seal well?

This is a great idea; just make sure it seals really well. The flatness on the lids will be really important. I work in the machining industry, so let me know if you need any tips on how to do this. My only suggestion is that if you are doing it, you might as well make it bigger. a 100 cigar humidor rarely holds 100 cigars. If it were me, I would go ahead and build a 250...but I keep a lot of cigars. Great idea!

to this one,but i have mine on legs. You may want to go this way. It's
                        pretty simple too build.

Thanks.....what kind of dimensions does 250 stick humidor have?

I am actually wanting something I can set out on the desk in my office/trophy room.

Those are the only two pictures that I have (or can find atleast). I gave it to a good friend of mine in college as his graduation present. I didn't see any major change in the humidity levels (mainly because of it's small size). I made it pretty tight with the top piece of spanish cedar and the magnets really did help hold it down too. One thing you could do to make sure the humidity stays constant is add some felt or foam strips around the top of the walls working as an air barrier. Just a thought.
