Need dash mount GPS for area with no roads...

Can anyone recommend a good dash-mounted (not handheld) GPS that works where there are no roads? Like an area such as Big Bend or a huge deer lease where it's easy to get lost? Need something that will record a route, allow me to store waypoints along the route, and help me find my way back to camp. The few that I have used after leaving the roads just quit working. A handheld would work but i need a big screen and want to be able to dash mount it.

    Any suggestions?

Have you tried leaving a trail of bread crumbs?

I left a trail of biscuits and found your tracks everywhere! =)

My garmin works pretty well off road....although the battery is starting to suck wind a little.

Set it to walking and it may get even better.

You can get a dash mount for any of the Garmin GPS units, not just the "car specific" ones. The Garmin 60Csx, Etrex, or the newer Colorado and Canyon units all have dash mounts than can be purchased from Garmin or RAM. Buy the Mapsource Topo softrware and it'll show most of the dirt and track roads in your area on the quad. These maps can be uploaded into the unit once you buy the software.

I checked up on what was offered before buying mine since I hunt national forests and drive the numbered logging roads (NF-) to get where I'm going. The Tomtom One's database has the logging roads in the national forests. As far as dirt roads on private property no in their database, I don't know if you can instruct the GPS to 'learn' or 'remember' where you were.

I remember calling their technical support and asking the girl the question. She was not sure but I told her to pull-up Granite Oregon (population 24) and look directly NW of town and tell me what she saw on the map. When I hear NF-7000 and similar I knew the database had the roads. She had no idea of what an NF was, I had to tell her.

I like my Lowrance iway 600. It has the largest screen.

Bobby, I don't know if any auto unit will allow adding your own waypoints like that, but they could exist. I know that a $100 Garmin eTrex will, and you can get a holder for it, but the display is small for driving.

I love my Garmin 60 CSx with TOPO software for this exact reason, was working on a 113,000 acre ranch and the topo software had alot of the major roads on it. all i had to do was turn the track log ON and OFF when I was driving down new roads and it saves them. I also put a 8gb micro sd card in it for tons of storage. I paid around 280 for the unit off of pcnation.com, topo software is around 100.00 unless you can find a bundle pkg. Cabelas may still have the 60 CSx pkg available with topo software and all, think it was 400-450.

Handheld with a USB or serial cable to a laptop, running USA Photomaps software. If there is a recent satellite picture of it, you're golden. You would need to download all the area photos prior to heading out, unless you have an aircard.
