    Vortex question

Lookin at one for my AR which will be assembled soon.

Looking at the Diamondback 4x12x40 BDC and the Crossfire 4x16x50 with the mid dot reticle.

Any comparison of the two besides price points? is there much difference in optical quality between the 2 lines?

Prolly be taking ot out to do some prairie dog whackin at some point in time, and poppin hogs.

I've got the crossfire you're looking at on my .270 and LOVE it! I looked through it and a Ziess scope back to back and the only thing I liked better about the Ziess was the eye relief at high magnification. That said, at 9x, which was as high as the Ziess went IIRC, the eye relief was similar if not the same, but when you turn the Vortex up higher, eye relief gets shorter and less forgiving. To answer your question about low light....I was able to see stuff with my scope that I can't see with naked eyes due to lighting. Hunting with a buddy back in early March, we were on stand before daylight the first morning, he was looking through his Leupold VX-III, I was lookin through my Vortex. I told him "There's the Corsican you picked out, shoot him." He said, "Where? All I see is darkness." I handed him my rifle and he said, "OH, THERE!" He could have busted him with my gun, but wanted to break in his new rifle, so he waited about 30 minutes to be able to see and ended up shooting a different animal because the one he wanted was gone by the time he could see. Now, to be fair, the Vortex is a 50mm objective with 30mm tube, and his Leupy was a 1" tube and I think 40mm objective, so my scope will let in more light by design, but as fas as I could tell, the optics are as clear as any scope I've ever looked through.

Thanks for the info, Tx...I'm really liking the reviews I've read about the Vortex line. The illuminated reticle seems like something neat...especially on pigs at dusk (or later).

You will LOVE that rerical for hogs / deer in low light. You won't like it for targets or Pdogs IMO

              why not?

prolly going to spend a good bit of time at the range, ave it ready for hogs every time we go out riding around down at the creek or at the ranch, and prolly hunt p-dogs once a year.

So I need a good target-hog scope with limited pdog application.

Here's a pic through my Vortex Crossfire.

It's actually much clearer when looking through it, but focusing the scope an camera is difficult. I think the camera was trying to focus on the lense of the scope, rather than the image.

hehe...never in my life have I seen someone take a pic of something through a scope. That's cool.

I like the features, reticle, and 30 mm tube, and have ordered the Crossfire from Mike.

Looking forward to getting it to the range and getting it on some hogs once I get all the AR pieces in from all the guys I bought stuff from Will post pics once it's all done. Got a bcg and a charging handle sitting here on the counter just wanting to be used in something.

                    Possible confusion here.

You said mid- dot. I took that as the illuminated reticle which has a dot in the middle of the cross hairs that illuminates and covers approximately 1 MOA.

Others have translated that (probably correctly) to mil-dot which does not have the target / precision issues I mentioned.

                      10-4

Based on the pic from TXfireguy, it looked like range (target) shooting wasn't going to be an issue.

I understand where you were coming from about the dot in the ceter of the crosshairs though.

Yeah, Bucky, the mil-dots are pretty small. That pic was taken at about 100 yards on 8-10X I beleive but it's been a couple months, so I don't remember for sure....the scope goes up to 16X so if you zoom all the way in, you can see lots. I would say that the dots cover less than the size of a deer's eyeball at 100 yards when zoomed all the way in.

Well...my Crossfire was waiting for me when I got home. Solid scope. Took it outside and played with it for a while in the backyard...checkin out birds at the feeder...CRYSTAL clear...nice and bright. Took it out front and cranked it up to 16x and tried to read the picense plate on the truck down at the end of the block...BLURRY I was floored. zoomed back out to 9 and things cleared up...WHAT THE????

                          Came back inside and pondered.

Then I checked out the Adjustable Objective...set at 15 yds. AHA! Forgot about that (duh!) Cranked up to 100 yds, and went back outside for test #2...chaching! Clear as a bell from 4x - 16x. decent eye relief at 16x too.

Then I took it in the bathroom and played with the illuminated reticle WAY cool. Mindee was laughing at me.

Took it out right before the movie...and under a dim streetlight, could read the license plate way down the street (100 yds ish) just fine. VERY good light transmission. Did not get to try it at dusk, but I know it's good to go under a feeder light for pigs now

                          Mike, Thanks again.

I told you it was a good buy didn't I? The ONLY complaint I have so far is the aforementioned eye relief thing. If it holds up to the recoil of the .270, and I'm SURE it will, I'll be more than happy at the price point.

                              vortex makes good stuff...

I bought a vortex viper last year, for the price it blows everything away in it's class.

they've got some never high end stuff I'd like to check out too... probably a companmy to watch for more stuff in the future
