Can you ship a gun to yourself?

I have a buddy of mine who is flying to another Texas city to buy a gun. How would you go about bringing it back with you if you have to fly back?

He was thinking of shipping it to his home. Can that be done?

He can check it on the plane like any other baggage.

You mean like a carry on? Does he have to disassemble the gun?

No like luggage. Nothing to it. All he needs is a case with two locks.

Its easy to take with you on the plane, when I lived in Colorado I flew into DFW 3 times a year with my rifle and shotgun. They take it as checked baggage. When he goes to check in his baggage they will take it and x ray it, or at least they did at DIA in Denver. It has to be in a TSA approved hard case and locked

If it's a long gun and not a pistol, he can mail it to any address within the state through the US Postal Service. Would be cheaper than paying to check it as luggage on the airlines, I imagine.

                It's a pistol...

Sounds like he's complicating the process. I guess what he really needs to do is call the airline and get the facts.

To check it all you have to do is have a hard case, airline approved, and locks (I would suggest TSA locks that way if they decide to go through it back in security they will not have to cut your locks). Depending on which airline he flies, he may not have to pay ANYTHING. It is considered baggage and will simply count as his checked bag, or one of his checked bags. If he is traveling light on a carrier where the 1st bag is free, he will get away without paying to check it. He will have to sign a firearms declaration at the counter, demonstrate that the weapon is unloaded during a quick inspection, and show that there is NO ammo in the same case as the weapon. Nothing to it.

Just read it is a pistol. Lockable case in our suitcase, unloaded gun, declare at counter, and get on plane. No big deal at all. I fly with guns on a regular basis and the only trouble I have EVER had was in Australia.

Check with the airline, find the procedure on their web site and follow it. print out a copy in case somebody at the airport decides they want to do it "their way". I do not believe you need or want TSA-approved locks on the case, since nobody is supposed to open the gun case in transit once it is inspected upon check-in. I also do not think (but am not positive) there is a requirement for an 'airline approved' case for the unloaded pistol to be transported in- metal, or plastic, etc. Check on that but my understanding is the law says a 'locked case' and they do not have an approved list- a gun shop should be able to tell you if they sell 'approved' cases.

I'd oil the gun well before hand, my experience with a bow was it got really cold in the baggage area in flight, and when I landed in Texas the humidity condensed on the rise and limbs. May not be an issue if it's packed inside a carry-on with clothes all around it.

It's done all the time to ship a pistol legally.

                            To answer your question, YES.
He can ship a gun to himself, he has to be the one to open the package.
