I recently did a test on 4 different broadheads. The heads tested were
1. Silver Flame
2. Maasai (a "Grizzly Stick" head)
3. Montec by G5
4. Steelforce Sabertooth
The test was to see how they would hold up againt heavy bone. We own a slaughter house and I got 2 shoulder blades off of a cow weighing about 800 pounds. I shoot a Mathews S2 at 60#, arrow weight (including broadhead) of 445 grains, going about 260 fps. All shots were taken at 20 yards. All heads used were 125 grain except for the Maasai which was 100 grain (it was given to me for free and beggers aren't choosers).
First I shot the Silver Flame and got what I expected. The head blew right throught about 1/2 " of solid bone and continued into the block target about another 13". Second the Maasai. Again I got what I expected. Blew right through and continued about as far as the Flame then my shaft broke, so it might have gone further. Then i pulled the heads out. The Flame was in prefect shape and was still shaving sharp
Hair was not jumping off my arm but a little bit was still coming off. I was seriously impressed. So i pulled out the Maasai and what do I see... chips and bends all along the blade of the head
Thats not right. For $90 / 3 heads that shouldn't happen and thats all I have to say about that.
Then I switched bones and shot the Sabertooth and the Montec. The Sabertooth blew right through and acutally out penetrated the Silver Flame
, and the Montec didn't make it through the bone. The bleeders on the Sabertooth were pretty messed up but the main blade was fine, but DULL. The montec was bent beyond recscue.
So i felt cheated. I paid so much for the Flame and the Sabertooth has a bigger cutting diameter and out penetrates.... But wait, I then noticed that the Sabertooth just so happened to hit one of the thinest spots of bone on the entier shoulder blade, maybe 1/10" think. I didn't shoot another time.
So thats what I found. I am a believer in the Silver Flame without a doubt. Next time I go for elk thats what I'm taking and I might even get a pack of the XL heads for deer and hogs. I will also carry the Sabertooth in my quiver with confidence. As for the Maasai, don't waiste your time or money. And the Montec has always been a fovorite of mine, and I've taken some game with it but... sometimes things change
