Nilgai question? Are their coats mountable this time of year?

Going on a nilgai hunt next week on the King Ranch and I was wondering what Niglais the coats will look like this time of year? Do they shed like most exotics?

I would like to get one mounted but not sure what the coats will look like this time of year?

I hunted a couple of weeks ago down at the El Sauz ranch in Port Mansfield and the ones I saw looked good. We didnt get one but put the stalk on some nice bulls but they werent quite what we were looking for. I will be down there this weekend and might try to get a cow but we are going to fish mostly. Im going to try to sneak out if my wife lets me. Good luck they are tricky animals to hunt but really fun.

I am really not sure, I have only seen them in the winter. There hair is pretty short though.

If I were spending the money on a trophy I would shoot one in the winter time. I took my friend to shoot one back in Feb. and it had a beautiful cape. I have hunted them as late as May but the capes don't look as good to me. I talked to a few guides from the valley and they told me April is about the cut-off for a good cape. If the trip is free, hunt them as much as you can no matter what time of year it is.

It's hit or miss this time of year since they do shed a somewhat winter coat. It's not so much shedding it's that when they tan it the hair will slip during tanning. If you want a rug you should be fine but if you want a prime hide I'd wait till late December or January.

I shot mine in Feb. in water valley, but it was still pretty cool down there then.

Feb. is still a pretty safe month to shot them in and still have a winter coat.
