    JVC *.mod video file conversion....

Last summer the wife and I took a trip with another couple (SAC and his better half). Well we took some video footage with SAC's (Mark's) camcorder which is a JVC. We are just now getting around to trying to download and splice the footage together, but I'm stuck. The files are downloading as .mod files. I play them on one computer here at work and I get video, but no sound. I play them on my computer here at work and get sound, but no picture. As comical as that sounds, it's driving me crazy.

Secondly, because they are .mod Windows Movie Maker nor any other software I currently have available recognizes it as a video file. So I can't combine or do any editing. Looking for a little help....

You can rename the video from .mod to .mpeg/.mpg and then play it in Media Player that has the proper codec.

If you try to import it into Movie Maker it will tell you that the codec is needed.
The codec is in the 'k-lite codec pack' (you will have to search for this and download)
I know of a site that has it but we can't post that URL here.

The JVC's come with an app named CyberLink that is like movie maker and allows you to create .mpg, mpeg, mov, wmv or whatever.

What you really need is a file converter - there are free ones out there and there are some out there for 20 bucks - I went ahead and bought one - and don't have any problems with the conversion - folks that just rename the file type typically have problems (from what I have read) - with the software I dont have any issues and can convert to whatever I like. Just google .mod converter and you will come up with a large list.

        Goodluck!

          Editing with JVC

          Hi,

My name is Chris. I work for JVC and would like to try and help.

It's definitely worthwhile to try the JVC software that came with your camcorder if you have a Windows Computer. It will let you do basic editing, and output your final video in a variety of ways.

Here are a few other alternate ideas.

The .mod files can work with Windows Movie Maker (WMM), but only if you have certain versions. They don't work with WMM if you have Windows XP. They do work with WMM if you have Windows Vista Home Premium (or better). They also work with Windows Live Movie Maker which is a free download if you have Windows 7 Home Premium (or better).

There are a couple of other tricks to use .mod files with WMM. With Windows Vista and WMM, you click on "Import Media", then to the right of the File Name, you need to change the file type from "All Media Files" to "All Files". That's it. It should work.

I would not recommend a file conversion utility as they take extra time and can reduce the video quality. Instead I would look at basic versions of popular editing programs like Pinnacle Studio or Adobe Premiere Elements. Both work very nicely with .mod files from JVC (or any other brand that uses .mod).

One last suggestion for anyone that is a Mac user. All JVC Everio camcorders also work great with either iMovie '08 or iMovie '09.

          I hope this helps.

          Chris

He is right. I recently got a JVC Everio and you just plug it in to the USB and iMovie does the rest.
