    Locator calls

I'm new to turkey hunting but I have done my homework and read as much as I could get my hands on. This morning I went out on my first turkey hunt but ran into a problem. Before sunrise I was using both an owl call and a peacock call but I never heard any birds gobbling. From what I've read, both of these locator calls are supposed to drive turkeys insane and demand a response. After sunrise I was checking a particular area out using the peacock call and nothing happened so I switched to an old box call and gave it a try. Instantly 3 gobblers roared at less than 100yrds. What gives? Why did my locator calls not work?

Depends on their mood, sometimes they will gobble, sometimes they don't. I have shot a gobbler and had his buddies gobble at the report right next to him. I do both crow and owl calls with my mouth and both usually work. I would suggest you getting a crow call in lieu of the peacock.

They're turkeys! Who knows what insanity is in their heads at any given time. I usually have pretty good luck with crow calls. Many a book has been written about how to figure out turkeys. All in all, Spring Turkey is most fun i've had hunting. Good luck figuring them out...

sometimes i have found if you are to close they will not gobble. if you think you are close to them on roost, use the hen on roost call (soft yelp). it works pretty good. try to use your locator call far out if you can.

Thanks for the tips/advice. I read that crow calls work as well but my local store didn't have any hence why I bought the other two. In reality, I probably would have bought all three given the chance.

Slamming the truck door hard as I can has worked for me for years. Seriously

Go ahead and laugh but I honk the horn on my truck and it works every time. Honest.

Try a good coyote howler for early morning or late afternoon.

Works for us too! My dad taught me that bout 20 years ago and I still use it today. Did last weekend as a matter of fact...

I've heard about slamming the truck door but never gave it much thought. I'm afraid if I honked the horn I'd be run over by cows looking to get fed.

I've hunted turkeys for years and they do react to the strangest noises. I had a friend tell me once that they had a donkey on their place and any time the donkey brayed turkeys would answer with a gobble.

Been turkey hunting and guiding for over thirty years and one of the best tips I can give you is always be be flexible in your hunting. What works one week may not work the next. I try to use the natural sounds around me as much as possible. Early in the morning I try to let the coyotes stir something up before I call on my own. When I am walking and I hear a cow bellowing I always stop and listen.. same thing with a passing plane. I have probably located more turkeys with a peacock call then any other call but it is not always a sure fire thing but then again none of them are. One thing I have been doing the last couple of years is using a real aggressive cutting call. They will usually gobble to it but you need to be ready to hunt right then. You cant use it while driving around in your truck then have to spend time getting all your stuff ready. Its not like the other calls in that you are making the sound of a turkey and he may decide to come on the run. Best of luck and be forewarned...... It can be addicting.
