The 597 is a remington plinker on the same lines as a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10-22. The VTR is simply a 597 with some tacti-cool hardware. At best, the 597 gets mediocre reviews, Some of the newer ones are better than the older ones, but still luke-warm reviews at best.
If you truly want an AR style .22 get the M&P 15-22 which was built from the ground up to be a .22 AR.

I have been looking at them recently. I had a model 597 in the .17 HMR, but it was recalled and now I have a coupon for $250 towards the purchase of any remington. I was thinking about going with the VTR, but I have not done any research on them yet. I will be interested to see where this thread goes.Comment

My bride got me the S&W15-22 for Christmas, and it is one sweet shooting 22. The coons sure got a surprise right after Christmas... got 4 of 'em before they could get away from the feeder the first evening I sat after getting it... pretty big stack of dead 'uns now.Comment
