    OT: Zero turn mowers

Looking for information about zero-turn mowers. I'm thinking I want one that is shaft driven rather than belt. Any recommendations on brands to look at?

I have a cub cadet and it's great. It's not the commercial grade but rather the residential one. We mow between 1-2 acres per cutting and have had it for 6 yrs. I wouldn't own anything else, change the oil and stay out of the fence and it runs like a charm.

      What's your budget?

Not sure what you mean by shaft vs. belt. On zero turns the majority of transmissions are hydrostatic. Only belts are for the blade drive.

There are a range of Home Depot type models; i.e. Cub Cadet, Toro, etc. that will run in the $2,000-$3,000 price range.

If you want something that will last look at Scag, Exmark, Dixie Chopper, JD Commercial, Kubota, etc. However, those will run you probably at a minimum of $5,000 - $6,000 as they are higher end commercial brands. The difference in quality is night and day from the big box store models. Heavier steel, better and bigger engines, higher blade RPM's, better transmissions, etc.

My experience with mowers is you get what you pay for.

I'm looking for something that is heavy duty. We have lots of sand where I live and I have to change the deck on my Craftsman mower about every 3 years.

I have had a Hustler 42" cut for three years with a Honda 20hp engine. Would not have anything else, mow approx 2.5 acres each use. Oh yeah not sure why they put cup holders on it. Got mine in Conroe.

I have a good friend that had a commercial lawn company around Houston and when I bought a bigger place I talked with him about what his recommendations were and he said all he ran was Exmark and he still had his first one, at this point in time it was about 8 years old and had been run 6-7 days a week most of the year... I was wanting to buy one mower and run it for a very long time, I figured if his were holding up to the daily abuse with someone else running them they would serve me very well on my place....

I bought a Toro Commercial (Toro is a sister company to Exmark, or at least it used to be)... I bought this a few years ago when I bought my property, I keep up 6 acres with it and we are much like you, lots of sand....

I would highly recommend giving Toro and Exmark Commercial grades a look before making up your mind, if your looking for longevity I think these will serve you well....

I've heard nothing but praise for the Dixie Chopper. I will be checking them out when I get my new place.

Look at http://www.husqvarna.com/us/. As stated in an earlier post, you get what you pay for. Husqvarna is one of the largest yard equipment manufactorers in the world. They have zeros from top to bottom. I have sold Yazoo/Kees, Hustlers, and am now sell the Husqvarna's. Good luck.

Just bought a Troybilt 50" with 25 hp Kohler on it. I researched and most of the decks are built to the same specs on the homeowner models. If your moving up to commercial you might give the Gravely a look, bought one for the church and it is very heavy duty.

Ferris hands down. The only mower on the market with suspension.

                              Scag
                              Exmark
                              Gravely
                              Kubota

I would go low end commerical instead of high personal grade

I bought a used Scag 54" Turf Tiger. Great mower.
