First PIG down on the property in Palestine

One of my best friend/hunting buddies and fellow retired Chief who I was stationed with a couple of times in the Navy (also a new TBH'er "BOHICA") killed his first pig this weekend. Under the guise of deer hunting we've been feeding the pigs on his property in Palestine for the past 5 years and it wasn't until 2 years ago that anyone had even seen one during the daylight hours. We have plenty of pictures of them at night. We trapped one several years ago and since then NADA! So after every deer season, we head up for a few weekends of hog hunting at night. Usually we sit in the dark till about 11 ish, see some coons and a few deer, head back to camp, have a few beers, cook supper and call it a night. This past weekend was planned just like the rest, we casually glanced at the weather forecast and thought "a little rain on Sat during the day" No problem! Maybe we should have looked a little harder, LOL. Friday night we sat till about 11 Pm and saw nothing but deer, coons and a rabbit. It rained all day on Sat and when the rain slowed down the wind cranked up to about 35 Knots. After checking the cameras a couple of pigs had come to the feeder just before sunrise Sat morning. By Sat evening the wind was howling, it was raining sideways and about 30 degrees. But we figured that we drove all that way and sat around all day so why not give it a try. I had on every piece of clothing that I had brought with me including a rain jacket since it had now started to sleet sideways, my stand location was picked due to the size of the oak tree that it was in, the wind was kickin!! . At this point we didn't really expect to see anything, So anyway, there I sat watching the occasional deer come to the feeder and trying to keep the rain from trickling down my back and about 1 hour later I heard his 30-06 go off. It startled me so bad I almost fell out of the tree. It seems that two boars had come in to the feeder and since we have not shot any pigs at all, they were uneducated as to the meaning of a white light on them after dark. I’m thinking the witness he left will tell all the others and we might never kill another one, LOL. So after my heart rate slowed to an acceptable level we met up at his stand and after a very short tracking job (40 yards) we found his pig. He had taken the top of the heart right off, I have no idea how the pig even went that far. So anyway, here are a few pictures. Based on other pigs I have killed I am guessing about 170 ish on the weight. Since I didn’t expect this trip to be any different from the others I left my scale at home. We decided to let him hang overnight and woke up to the same wind on Sunday morning with the addition of a sideways snow vice rain. Made for very cold hands while skinning him out.

As you can tell, he "BOHICA" was one happy camper!! I was happy to be there with him. I was there when he killed his first deer with a bow (04 I think) several years ago (same property), we had driven down from Maine and bow hunted for a week (I think it worked out to 60 hours of driving for 60 hours of hunting). I was also sitting beside him working a slate call when he bagged his first gobbler while we were stationed in Maine. He said that the next pig was going to be with his bow. I guess we need to start building lights for the bows now.
