I'm fixing to be putting together my 280AI using a 700 long action and a B&C stock. Like said up above I've slowly aquired one piece at a time and tried not to big slump in the old bank account at one time.

Yeah, JRG, my plan is one piece at a time, but the barreled action would be all one piece for me, since I don't want to use a gunsmith any more than I have to. I was originally looking for Rem 700 actions, but I just can't find them. Oh, sure, Brownells and Midway sell them, for over a grand each, just for the reciever! I really want to put one together myself, as a project/hobby, and just so I can say I did it myself. I also haven't found a factory stock on a rifle that I really like, without paying close to or over a grand. I handled one of the Howa rifles with a Boyds thumbhole stock yesterday and really liked the way it felt, although I don't really want a thumbhole, what I'm after is a pistol grip that is almost 90 degrees to the action. This is what got me interested/started on this endeavor: http://www.snipercentral.com/howa.htm I guess I'll take .308, the US Marines can't be THAT wrong, and ammo availability would be great. I guess all that's left is to just save up and do it. Boyds sells the stocks to individuals and you can get an acraglass bedding kit with it. Do the work yourself and save much money. I can be a perfectionist when I need to be. Kinda wondering if I should pillar AND glass bed it, or just glass. My main concern is whether or not the Howa action will shoot as good as "the standard of comparison" Remington 700. I am capable of shooting one hole groups at 100 yards with the right rifle, I've done it before, but I've never had a rifle of my own that would do it, and to buy one that can, I'm looking at a ton of cash all at one time. I THINK I can build one myself SLIGHTLY cheaper, but the real benefit is I can buy it piece at a time and not bankrupt myself all at once, plus I get the satisfaction (assuming I get the results I'm expecting) of doing it myself.

Something is not right if you are seeing bare actions for $1k. You can buy much better actions than Remmy for that kind of cash.

well if your wanting a "long range accurate rifle" than the AR is not the gun. Get a bolt action.

Remington 700 LTR in 308 Win. Easy 600yd rifle and can be had for under $800. This the most accurate production rifle I have ever fired.
