Welding Classes - Austin

I'm interested in learning how to weld. I have zero experience with it but would like to be able to weld some stuff for the ranch. Does anyone know where I can go to learn how to weld and what tools/equipment I need in the AUSTIN area? I just want some basic lessons to get me started so I can play around.

I've thought about that, but I"m not sure how structured the classes are. Considering I have a full time job, and often work long hours, I"m not sure I can commit to making it every class for an entire semester. I may give them a call anyways to talk to them about it.

I'd give ACC a call. I'm sure that many of their students have day jobs and that the school offers classes that accomodate them. Worth a try, anyway.

I just bought a old stick welder off of craigs list for $100 and watched some videos on youtube.

well, i guess that is an option. problem is, i don't even know what kind of welder to get or what i would need. i'm kind of ignorant on the whole process. i appreciate everyone's input though.

Get with a Austin area TBH welder and ask questions. You will be looking at getting into stick or mig welding. I prefer stick welding. You can learn enough in an afternoon welding project to get by for farm/ranch welding, with a little practice.

I use a Lincoln AC/DC Crackerbox (just plugs into a 220 wall outlet) bought at a pawn shop for 200.00.

ACC has some good night classes, I believe they start in the summer. I took a good intro to welding class over at the Riverside campus a few years ago, it was well worth it!!

If you want to come to the shop just north of Lake Georgetown I'll show you how. I have taught a whole bunch of people how. I've even helped customers buy their own welders and taught them how. We can come up with some small projects for you to build and by the time you get them built you should know how and also have something to show for it. That's the way I usually do it. You could bring soft drinks and lunch to pay for expendables. PM if your interested.

I've got a fab shop in Pflugerville. Carbon and stainless, mig, tig and stick, you name it. You are welcome to come hang with some of my welders. They would love to help you. We always have scrap to work on.

i was in the same situation, but i live in Liberty and the Liberty County Workforce has offered free classes to people who live or works in Liberty County through Lee College... Most jucos offer some type of vocational training, check with your closest one...
