A Recent Thread Got Me Thinking

The recent thread about the display of game in the back of a pickup got me to thinking. I voiced my opinions in that thread so I will not rehash them here.

There’s an interesting characteristic of the online world that makes things sticky sometimes. The ubiquity of information means that not only can we comment or opine on anything and everything, but it’s easy to do, and it is widely accepted to do so.

It’s understood that if you put a statement, issue, opinion or action out there publicly, you are inviting commentary and opinion.

The more we share information, the more it’s reacted to. Sometimes we ask for opinions directly, but other times you don’t. Is simply publishing a statement, issue or action of any kind an implied solicitation of input? Is that the price of being an unfettered publisher of ideas?

When you receive a reaction to your statement, issue, opinion or action how do you decide who to listen to?

When should you put stock in the reaction, and when not?

When do you take heed of the stuff that’s not necessarily easy to hear, the criticisms that have merit, and when do you chalk it up to “noise”?

Can you let any of the accolades act as a barometer, or are they mostly empty, sycophantic ramblings?

    How to distinguish?

If you ignore it all, are you narrow minded? A snob? Or judicious about what input you entertain?

When I post a thread, I take all responses with a grain of salt. When you put something out in front of thousands of unknown people, oyu must expect that their opinions differ. Even though you may not agree with them, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. On matters of opinion, nobody is more right or wrong than the next person.

      IN MY OPINION

my thought is if you want to post something on the internet don't cry if someone hurts your feelings and if your feeling get hurt easy don't post it for everyone to see.

          If I may?

I did not see the other thread. But I like your quesitons . I would guess that most of those questions would be answered given the social structure of a given society as to what is "good" or what is "bad".

Something I've seen on other forums are polls that can be voted on. The other thread you mentioned would have been a good one to see where everyone stood on the issue as a group.

Maybe, but would a polls results change the opinion of anyone? Looked to me like good logic failed to change anyone’s mind. Only made some of them less rational.

                This is what i usually go by,use to try a make most decisions;

Common sense (or, when used attributively as an adjective, commonsense, common-sense, or commonsensical), based on a strict construction of the term, consists of what people in common would agree on: that which they "sense" as their common natural understanding.

I think that when you ask for someone's opinion you should be open to criticism. And if you're open minded you should be open to that criticism and be ready to accept that you might need to change your way of thinking. In my opinion this is one of the meaning of humility. The opposite would be arrogance.

If you post a part of your life on the internet or a forum such as this then you should be ready for people to speak their peace. You might not have directly asked for it but by posting it online you've invited their criticism. In the case of this forum consider this...you've probably brought it up around the camp fire and so treat it like you would a conversation around a real camp fire. Listen, consider, discuss...take opinions with a grain of salt.

Probably would not change anyone's opinion. All that is a product of one's upbringing and maturity level (or lack of). It's just a tool to see where the consensus is.

You can't seriously expect to change a person's opinion on a subject such as this by responding to a thread with your own opinion. Basically, most people would probably think you have a valid point, but what would make them change their opinion on the subject?
If I turned in a term paper based on my opinion, without any quantitative facts to support it, I really don't think I would pass.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, just giving my observations. I was not a supporter of the previous thread, either, but why get upset when you can't change a person's mind?
