I've got three shotguns scattered through the house, to of them with #2 and one with birdshot. The one down by our kids rooms is the one with birdshot, but the way our house is laid out, they would have to walk past us to get to our girls, and I don't think the two dogs would let that happen. The only window into the girls part of the house is in the backyard and there is a big a** dog back there. Any other entrance will put them coming past up first and I promise that won't get that done unless they kill me first. It's going to be 2 shot to the upper body.

3 inch #4s in mine, but inside a house any load should be effective. Ive seen alot of damage come from a 20 Ga. loaded with birdshot, so I think it should be sufficient. Ive also seen the holes a full choke and #4s puts in a truck hood, so thats what i use.

Inside your house any bird shot #9, 8, 7-1/2, 6, 5, 4, or 2's will work. If someone gets to within 6' of you when you fire it would be like getting hit by a slug because of the shot patteren. Most of the shot will still be in the shot cup. It makes one heck of a mess on bodymass or the head. You can take a peice of plywood and stand 6' from it to check what I have written .
            Eric,
Are you still downtown Houston? I have been down there since Tuesday on a jury. LOL

              Thanks!
Just get the AR-15 pistol that should solve it. For a shotgun you may be able to get a custom stock of some but cant think of any off the top of my head.

Autopsy did not reveal any drugs or alcohol in his system at all. It is pretty amazing what a human can take when pumped on adrenaline much less if they are strung out on drugs or something else.

The object is not to see how many times they need to be shot, it is to stop them preferably with the first one. Plus, I don't want to be ripping off multiple rounds of anything inside my house.

And the only reason to give up a 12 gauge in favor of a 45 is if you are out of ammo or the shotgun malfunctions.

Clint Smith's philosophy has a lot of merit.

You use your pistol to fight your way to your shotgun to fight your way to your rifle.
                I agree with this.

Sometimes the folks here amaze me. I show evidence many times over that bird shot is a poor defense load and folks still argue that it is.

Wood, sheetrock, etc.. is not a human body. I can shoot holes in plywood, sheetrock, etc with a 22 or even a pellet rifle, does that mean it's ideal for defense?

Very few if any folks here have actually been in a shooting situation using bird shot so it is all speculation, but ballistic gelatin, which is the closest medium to humans that we have proves that it is less than ideal.

I pray none of us ever have to find out the hard way, but I will take my chances with a load that is proven to be effective over one that is questionable any day.

                          Hey Mike-

I read the link you provided, all the way through. I though it was very good and thought provoking. It verified for me what I have always thought about #1 buck. Thanks for that link.

SanSaba this was back in 1983. I picked up 5 cases from a Customs rep during my Coast Guard days in Virginia. I suppose back then it was an option but considering they were willing to give us freebies, I suppose they never bought off on it. We stuck it into our Armory and over time it ended up getting used for R&R skeet shoots. If my memory serves me, it was all Winchester ammo, high brass 8 shot, Government order.

I'm thinking federals new 3in #4 buck for yots in the house and keep shots in the chest head area... It would shoot over the wife and kids mostly if that came into play... Out of the house 3in 00 for me.. Man just the thought of a face full of anything comming out of a shotgun sends a chill up my spine...

I was shot in the back at 20 steps with #7 dove load during the late dove season in South TX one year. Not fun but my Carhart Field coat with the zip on game bag saved me. It still stung a bit and was not fun. My brother inlaw got a good arse chewing and (I regret) cursing... I was in full Ticked Off mode lol...
