I took my youngest stepson, Derek, over to Montague opening weekend. We/he didn't do any good so we went back the following Monday afternoon. 15 minutes after the feeder went off, in comes this buck. We had pix of him, along w/3 or 4 other bucks that Derek had his eye on.
I was in a groundblind about 50 yards away, running the video camera. The buck came in behind Derek, only about 5 yards away. Now Derek has only taken 1 deer (8 pt last year) w/a bow. He has missed a couple too (doe's). So.... w/the deer being SO CLOSE, I think he kinda got "the fever". Plus, as the deer made his way to the feeder, he kept a hard quartering away angle. Too hard of an angle for a shot. I had the camera running and after a solid 15 minutes, the buck finally turned perty near broadside to Derek @ about 22 yards. I was zoomed up as the arrow smacked the buck. !@&%*#^%&@! The buck then turned towards me in a dead run, the arrow sticking out about the same distance on both sides! High and back.
About an hr of looking in the dark produced a fairly clean arrow and NO BLOOD! I couldn't believe that it didn't spine/drop him. I went back and searched the next day too. Nothing!
We (especially Derek) were sick over it. He had been practicing every day, for a month and was stacking the 75 gr Muzzy tipped Blackhawks consistently.
Well........... we stopped by Montague on our way home from the lease for an evening hunt this past Sunday. After seeing only a small button buck, we grabbed the card out of the cheap $59 camera and headed home. When we checked the card, we couldn't believe it. We had presumed/feared that this buck would suffer a horrible slow death but apparantly that won't be the case.
Here are a couple of pix of the buck nearly a month after the shot. Other than the two vent holes, he still looks fairly healthy. We had pix of him on 3 different days.
