How would you mount a scope on this?

Trying to figure out how to mount a scope on this gun. It is drilled and tapped but I dont know if you would need a special mount made just for the gun or if it is a kind of universal thing. It is a remington 742.

they have mounts for the top of it...I have two....30.06 and .308. there should be I think 4 tapped screw holes along the top

      I likes em both...

Don't apologize it's a campfire...we can talk about whatever! You can get mounts for it no problem. I put some on mine that were high rise so I could still use my open sights under the scope. Not hard to find. As long as the top of your receiver is drilled and tapped it'll be no prob.

I don't think I would try to find whatever quirky mounting bracket used those two side taps. If it's not already tapped on top, I would take it to a gunsmith and have it done. I did a google image search on "Remington 742 with Scope" and almost all the guns have the scope mounts top mounted like blacksunshine said.

I guess I was just focussing on the side taps too much. They look so out of place I just figured they had to be useful for something! Thanks guys

The top gun is a Browning BPS. I found the scope mount at BPS that slides over the top and sets on each side. Replace the one pin and tighten up the screw that runs under the breach. Regular scope mounts attach to it.
Wish I could remember the brand?????

are there four tapped holes on top of the receiver?

here is a pic of my .308 with the scope mounted on it:

Uncle Mikes made and I guess still does a mount for that. The reason it is like that is the top of that rifle is very rounded. Look at the picture. the mount will mount flat to the side and curves around the top and give good support it is called a "side mount" they did that a lot on 30-30s because of the top eject.

yrs ago it was popular to do a side scope mount , screws threaded into side of recvr.

this is what it should look like

your hole spacing and screws look like a poorly executed DIY job

if it were my gun, bring the 742 to a reputable gunsmith and have the top of recvr drilled & tapped for a "top mount" scope base

the mount that is on my .308 to get my 50mm scope on i (although I had to remove the rear site) was a Leupold 49992. now Red's did not have a high mount so I went with this one since the scope fit.

on my 30.06 742, my Mother had them put a redfield scope mount on it back in the 60's (anniversary gift for my Father), not sure what the number is but a quick google search gave the number 47170 for the model number
