    Texas Hunter Lost in Colorado

Hate to hear this. Prayers for him and his family:

Search scaled back for Texas hunter missing in Colo.

    Associated Press

MEEKER, Colo. — Authorities said today they have scaled back a search for hunter from Texas who was last seen five days ago in northwestern Colorado before a heavy snowstorm moved in.

Walter Eugene Benskin, 53, of Santa Fe, Texas, was last seen Wednesday near 10,343-foot Ripple Creek Pass about 125 miles west of Denver and 30 miles southwest of Steamboat Springs, the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Department said.

Benskin was hunting with his son-in-law when they separated and the son-in-law, whose name was not released, went back to their camp for a jacket, the sheriff's department said. Benskin did not return to the camp that evening.

Later Wednesday, a snowstorm dropped about 2 feet of snow in the area.

Search-and-rescue crews from Rio Blanco, Garfield and Mesa counties, Meeker Fire and Rescue, a tracking dog and a National Guard helicopter have participated in the hunt for Benskin but found no trace, authorities said.

A smaller group including relatives of Benskin searched again Sunday and another aerial search was planned Tuesday, authorities said.

While 53 isn't old, a hunter that age probably shouldn't be hunting alone in such a remote area. I'm guilty of doing stuff like that myself, but it's not wisdom. I sure hope they find him alive, but 5 days is a long time to survive in such conditions. It doesn't look good does it?

Years ago my family and I spent vacations at Ripple Creek Lodge which is in that area. Even during July you would come across snow in different areas. That is definately a remote area.

I hope he makes it out OK.

Having been in a survival situation on my first elk hunt last September with a friend, my heart really goes out to this guy. When the weather moves into those mountains, it's treacherous. He is most likely dead, unfortunately. This situation is very grave. Prayers sent.
