    Free ranging Elk

Could someone help me with trying to put together a DIY for free ranging Elk in TX. Looking for some meat, not necessarily antlers. I would really like to give this a try this year or next. Feel free to pm or e-mail me if you want.

not sure if there are any free range elk in Texas. I know there are a few that get out of high fenced ranches, but an actual free range heard... I dont know. If there is, I bet its a tuff hunt.

Good luck with the search. I'll be watchin this thread. I'd like to know too.

They are protected and only by permit. The only free range Elk in Texas are in far West Texas close to the New Mexico border. The TPW offers a few permits every few years. Check the Texas Parks and Wildlife web site and search for elk. You can find some in day type leases.....

They are no longer protected and you do not need a permit.
The law was changed several years ago.

Unless thing have changed drastically, Elk are considered non-native game animals in Texas. Antelope are regulated by permits issued to landowners. As a non-native game animal there are no seasons or bag limits, as with pigs and other exotics. RMEF has the west texas elk progect and are working with ranchers to support the approx. 3K elk there. Contact land owners in the area and you may be able to work a deal on a cow for a pretty reasonable price.

There are a lot of free ranging elk in alpine and especially up in ft davis. I don't know if any are on public lands though most all are on private ranches not high fenced. The CF,o6 and eppenauer ranches all offer hunts. We have pushed cattle out of the mountains and had herds of 15 or so spotted up there. The glass mountains toward marathon also hold a good herd. There is no season on them since they are not considered native, even though the ranchers say they have been up there as long as they can remember.

that is where i meant....my mind went blank for a second though...you may be able to find some public land but i doubt it...and a hunt is gonna cost ya just as much if not more than some of these high fence places..have seen some BIG elk killed in the glass mountains....one was a world record if i remember right? just couldnt be a world record since it was not native...pretty sure it was posted on here

Trophy8 you are correct about the world record being killed but it was up in alpine on the CF. I killed a 305 out in Ft Davis, wasn't the biggest one I saw though.

I called San Angelo Lake and Park Patrol this past season to see all the game that was legal to hunt on the city's public land and they said something about trying to raise a herd out there and if I was to see some, not to shoot them. They said that they were going to be starting draw hunts in a few years when the numbers come up.

I hunted free ranging elk near Alpine. I worked with an outfitter and killed a really nice bull. We saw lots of elk!
