    Changing a power steering pump?

Let me start off by saying that I can do alot of stuff with wood, steel, sheetmetal. I have built houses, fences, barns, carports ect. Heck, I can even skin a buck and run a trotline. The one thing that I have never had an intrest in is working on cars. That being said, how difficult is it to change a power steering pump in a 2005 GMC? What do I need to look out for and how bad can I screw it up if not done correctly?

Pretty easy. You'll need a puller to get the pulley off if the new one doesn't have one.

          easy money
If you do need to get the pully off you can usually take it to an autoparts store and they will take it off for you.

Just be sure to get a pulley puller from the auto parts place. Take the top of the fan shroud off to give you some more room as well. Not hard at all. It takes more time to take and put back on the pulley than all the other stuff combined. If you plan on doing small repairs to your truck, it may be a good time to invest in one of the repair manuals as well. They are about $20, Chiltons or Haynes. Pretty good books to have on hand.

Just be sure to have fluid in it and hand turn it before starting the truck. If not you will fry the pump instantly. Learned this the hard way.

I've done p/s pumps and even the p/s gear box. Not rocket science. Google make/model/year and replacing power steering pump you'll probably find some guy who did it and took pictures of the project.

I dont know how hard it would be but it has to be easier than changing a 95' ford f350 from a automatic to a standard. i have NO!! mechanical skill and a friend and i were able to do that so have fun and good luck.

Thanks guys. I will try to knock it out this week. And Jaspro, I didn't think I would ever say this but I would rather see the guy-pulling-his-eyes-out avitar than that hairy foot one.

The pulley must be removed to gain access to mounting bolts located behind the pulley. Need to have a pulller/installer set for this purpose. Remove the pressure hose by going underneath the vehicle. Some of the Chev trucks require removing lower steering shaft to one side to allow the pump to be removed. After mounting the pump back to the bracket, the pulley must be reinstalled in the proper position to make sure the surpentine belt grooves align with the other pulleys or trouble with the belt will soon follow. Be sure the pump you buy has the outer reservoir housing installed or that can bring on another problem. Some pumps must have the pressure control valve changed at the pressure line connection into the replacement pump. Pay close attention to this detail.
