    Gps

    I am looking at getting my first handheld GPS unit. I don't know much about them, but I am comparing two models (Garmin Venture HC vs. Garmin Legend HCX). They are the same price ($169) at Cabela's. The main differences look like: 1) larger display on the HCX, 2) Larger download memory on the HCX (64mb vs. 8mb), and 3) mapping software included on the HC, but not the HCX.

    I have a buddy that really likes his Venture HC. What would you guys go with? Is the larger download memory more important than the included mapping software?

    Thanks for your input!

    I really like the e-trex series (Legend HCx) but these units have had some issues with the screens and/or toggle switches going out after a year or so. I work for a state agency that uses a lot of these and the e-trex seems to have a little more issues than the others. The 60csx is a good unit. Also, you might want to save a little more money and buy one of the Garmin Colorado or Oregon units.

      I have a plain old Etrex Legend ($100) which does just fine for me.
      I believe that:
      H = high sensitive reciever
      C = color display
      X = card slot for maps
      Even though the Legend has been fine, I'm really looking at the Vista HCX($299). It has the electronic compass (don't need to be moving to know direction)
      You can spend more on the higher end models, and I've heard great things about them all.

        snakelover would be a good one to ask about units. My wife bought me a Garmin 60CSx for Christmas. It's a lot of machine and I'm still learning more about it.

          You should consider looking at the Delorme units if for no other reason for comparison basis. I have a PN-30 Earthmate unit and could not be happier. Great screen, even in full sunlight. Expandable cards is definately needed if you are going to go with other map types from high definition satellite, to navigational, to topographical, etc

            I have never used either of these models, but I use garmin units at home and work. I don't think you could go wrong with either. You can buy the software separately if need be, so get the unit you like.

                You have got to see about the Garmin Rino 520 530. It's a sweet maching that features a two way radio. If your buddy's have the same unit it can pin point there location. You can always see where they are at!

                    Any older GPS units out there that I could look at buying on Ebay, I just wanna be able to hump into Sam Houston a little deeper or into Alabama Creek and be able to set a way point for my truck, something with topo would be great, but I think that's pretty much standard now, eh?

                      There are so many GPS units for sale on Craig's List, that people don't get the interest / inquiries and you can find some great deals on units. If you have the patience, respond to some older posts and make some offers. You will be surprised at what you can get.
