Feral Hog Seminar Info from Today in Luling

Statistical info on heli kill flights: the hogs run faster when being shot at.

On whole cottonseed used as toxic hog feed: some hogs died, but it's unknown whether it's from the toxin associated with the cottonseed or other reasons since some hogs also gained weight after eating it repeatedly.

Feral sows give birth to between 4 and 6 piglets with 8 surviving.

Ferals now in 39 states including No. Dakota. Somehow they seem to have skipped over So. Dakota. Did they know that's where former Senator Tom Dascle is from?

A big hog can scurry up a corner of a 5' high corral, using the corner pole like a ladder. The piglets can often wriggle through the squares, and the intermediate sized pigs can dig under. And that's why if you don't check your pen daily, you'll eventually give up, believing it's not catching any hogs.

A heli kill recently accounted for 124 hogs. A subsequent one six weeks later over the same area accounted for 135 hogs. Once again proving the old bromide that Nature abhors a vacuum.

In the few years I have been watching feral hogs VERY closely, I have not seen a litter of more than 8 and they DO NOT give birth more than once a year. Litters will combine with others temporarily giving the impression of larger litters.

I vote pigs with a recurve out of a heli...that would be fun....after I got frustrated I would switch to the AR.

txsteele seems to one of the few to "get it" .... even though everything I said was something which was actually said by the folks running the seminar.

If fishdude is correct, they are not nearly as prolific as we thought. They are only capable of increasing the hog population at a rate of 800% per anum.
A fellow at the meeting raised the question " can feral hogs be domesticated". The speakers response was "why would anyone want to".
