You need to bleach it. Go to a beauty supply store and get bleach (the powdered kind used on hair) and peroxide. Mix the two to a paste like consistency, then cover the skull with it. Let it sit overnight, then clean the stuff off with an old paintbrush. The skull should be nice and white.

Use peroxide. NEVER use bleach on a skull. NEVER.

James, are y'all still hunting in San Saba?

I use the bleach from the beauty shop too. Just mix the powder & peroxide together, apply it with a brush (I use a foam brush) let it set for a couple of hours and rinse off. If it's not white enough for you, repeat the process.

barnett just so you don't go into Sally's and confuse the girls in the store like I did......the product is actually called 40 VOLUME peroxide developer from Sally's .......(12% actual peroxide)......available in clear or paste......the brand is Salon Care. They look at you with a deer in the headlights look if you ask for 40% peroxide when they don't have anything near that strong.

Soak in a plastic shoe box. Don't get the bases in the solution either...Since you won't be able to completely fill over skull without getting the bases wet, fill to a half inch below bases.....you can wrap the pedicles underneath the bases with strips of paper towel and zip tie them to keep them in place...also place a paper towel on the skull plate....use a spoon to get the paper towel wet for the top of the skull .....the peroxide mix will wick up through the towels and whiten the pedicles without getting it on the actual antler.

            OR

Get the paste and brush on....then wrap in saran wrap.....

Thanks for all the infomation. I guess its normal for the skulls to have that dengy
color right after boiling them. I figured I done something wrong.
I will get peroxide does it need to get sunlight to white it after the peroxide? thanks again.

                  Heat accelerates it.

In talking with guys more in the know, it is not sunlight that boosts the peroxide, but actual heat.... I placed mine in front of a small space heater to get a super boost..

Heat is the key, not time. Put your paste on the skull with a brush, wrap in saran wrap, and set it in front of a heater for 30 minutes (make sure to rotate it every 10 minutes). Make sure you don't catch the cellophane on fire too. Once you start unwrapping, you should see steam coming off the skull. Rince off skull with warm soapy water and set back in front of heater, uncovered, to dry for 20 minutes (again, rotate).
Here's one I just finished yesterday using this method.

Don't forget to degrease the skull before you whiten it or it will yellow over time.
