Sambo, I am from that area, raised there and hunted there for years before moving south. My family still has a ranch just north of Bagwell.
There ARE some big deer there just not great number and the brush is THICK.
Tons of squirrels, lots of eastern turkeys in some spots, where there are some there are LOTS of them. Plenty of hogs. The antler restriction has really helped that part of Texas, but there is still a good bit of road hunting that goes on.
It can be a good place to hunt, like alot of other parts of Texas alot depends on your nieghbors.

We hunt between Bagwell and Manchester. Heavily hunted, but there are some big boys out there. Lots of hogs and Eastern Turkeys, too. Last year was our first year on this lease and we didn't see many mature deer, but they are there. Hopefully the antler restrictions will help to get the age structure back in check.

Hunt between Bogota and Clarksville. Average number of deer are less than 15 per mile per TXP&WD and I think they are right. Not a lot of whitetail but some big boys. Like Aggiebush said, lots of Hogs. A guy on my lease killed one at 500lbs last year.

There are a lot more deer thatn there use to be, but there is alot of cover, food, and water as well. They can stay hid from you for long periods of time. The AR has been a huge help, but I agree there is a lot of road hunting that goes on day or night. All in all it is a great place to hunt as long as you are not paying too much

I've been hunting it since 84' and the above post are right. You will likely see 1-6 deer per day, and by December it will be closer to one. A few big one scattered around. I have seen as many as 30 in one field, and gone 10+ days without seeing a single deer.

Sam, here is a deer Trent, my Grandson, killed on Chapman Ranch four years ago. Chapman's is North of Avery and English on the Red River. These deer, honestly, are few and far bewteen, BUT there are some there.

                      Good Luck.
