So we were down at the ranch this past weekend trying to get away from the snow here in North TX. We had a large group of friends down as we were doing the last part of our management which is shooting a large number of does and nilgai cows. We wait on our does so that we can do fetus research and also kidney fat analysis. The nilgai cows have completely weened their young and are bred now so its a good time to manage the herd density on them as well.
So Staurday around noon we are sitting in the house eating lunch when one of my buddies hollers, "Cowgirl is chasing a Nilgai outside". Cowgirl is my 10 mo old Jack Russel pup that has been doing all kinds of blood trailing this year. I had left her and my 2 best Blue lacy's on the porch at lunch.
We all bailed outside and I took off towards the barking around the back of the house where we park the vehicles. Cowgirl had this cow nilgai bayed all by herself. I jumped up in my jeep and grabbed my 454 Lever gun and then they broke running around the back of the house.
With all the ruckus my 2 lacy's joined in (or back in?) and started trying to catch the cow.
As they came around the north side of the house there was a jeep parked a few feet from the steps going up the porch and the nilgai try to split them. That didn't work out very well and she came sliding into the front yard.
All 3 dogs are caught and Terry jumps on the cow while Jerry jumps on teh back of her.
By the time I got around the end of the house they had her down and were screaming for a knife!
We all carry boot knives so we went to work and dispatched her quickly.
Granted she was tired and I think the dogs had been working her for longer than we know but, I think it is amazing we were able to catch and kill a nilgai cow with my dogs and a knife!
Its the first and only nilgai I have ever heard of being killed with a knife!
