    Foc

I have heard of this but not paid much attention to it. Read some today. From what I can gather the higher the number the better the flight of the arrow....

I checked the arrows I was thinking of using for 3d/field and the foc was 11.8. The arrows group very well at 20 but have not tried longer distances yet... and will not be able to try until afte in door state. weight 340 grains..

    Is there a major number?

Don't go below 10%+ is a good place to hangout for 3D. To be honest if your arrows are flying true then I wouldn't worry about it at all. If it aint broke don't fix it!

A lot has been said about that as more people understand what it is and how it will help/hurt arrow flight. Some of my testing has found that a heavier arrow with more foc can produce faster flight, more fps with a more weight! That will mean more ke. And when you hit a shoulder or a femur bone is when you need the most. Well I hit the shoulder on the last buck, through it, took out the femur on the opposite side and stuck in the dirt. I have 16% foc and I am not going down with less!

agree... but he was asking about 3D/Target. I am a huge fan of heavy arrows and punch FOC. I shoot 200 gr. Muzzy Phantoms. Go to Alaskanarchery Website and read Fred Asbells study on the topic. Pretty insightful!

For 3D I don't think FOC should be a main concern as long as you don't go too low. If you go too low the "archers paradox" of your arrow will go on for a longer time, decreasing accuracy and arrow stability. Like said earlier, at least %10 and you should be fine.

There have been quiet a few threads on KE, speed, foc amd momentum on here recently. Do a search and yuo should find a lot. I think you have enough now, but it would not hurt to see what would happen with more.

Speaking of looks like you changed your sig line since the testing Mudslinger.

Here is mudslingers testing and conversation on the subject as it pertians to hunting type situations. Good info here though and a good place to start.

I think mine is a smidge under 10% but the arrow fly well and have no problem with penetration. I haven't figured out how the guys shooting FMJ tipped with 100grn heads and wraps and blazers would get much more than 9-10%

I shot GT for field and 3d so can play with the weight a little bit... Interesting but a bit over my head on the addition and subtraction part

I don't shoot the FMJ, but I know some guys that do and they use weighted inserts, usually at least 100 grains. 3Rivers has a good selection if you are not familiar with them.

If you look at my tinkering chart you will see that by adding weight to the front it ups your foc, KE and continually adds momentum. Some say tht momentum is the key more than KE to hunting. Ke will drop after a certain point, but momentum will continue to rise. Momentum will come into play with penetration at longer ranges and on bigger thicker skinned animals. Waht you give up in adding weight to any arrow is speed, but what you will gain is a quieter arrow with possibly more KE and definitley more momentum.

Don't want to get into a big thing but I don't think thats true. Momentum is weight x velocity, and KE is weight x velocity^2. Velocity will always drop, and in the KE equation it drops at the rate of an exponent. Weight is always constant. So you will lose KE a lot faster due to a drop in velocity.

I would not worry about it, I prefer staying between 10-12% FOC specialy for 3D shooting, Your set up is good, leave it.
