    A/c question

I have a window a/c-heater unit in the garage that has quit heating. Can the heating part
be repaired? Also will this be a professional job or can it be done by DIY?
Or just bite the bullet and buy new(last tight money option)?

    Thanks Deans

Depends upon level of DYI experience and back ground. If it is a heating element it should not be too difficult if you have a bit on knowledge about electricity and a multi-meter for troubleshooting. If it is a heat pump, the you need to have a basic knowledge of the refrigeration cycle and probably some piercing valves and a manifold gauge set in order to access the system.

How do you tell if a window unit has a heat pump? I thought heat pumps were stand alone units.

          Thanks

Does the compressor/outside fan run when in heat mode? If so, it is a heat pump. If not, you probably have a bad heater element/relay. If it is the case of the heater element, it can probably be fixed if you can find the parts.

I have not done much with window units, but the heater elements can't be much different than conventional units. You can troubleshoot it yourself with a little electrical knowledge and a multi-meter. Let us know what type it is.

If you slide the window unit out of the case and you see something that looks like this:

then you have a heat pump window unit.

Thanks guys. Was not aware a window unit would have a heat pump. I learned something today. Will check it out.
