    Questions about .300 Weatherby Mag

What's the recoil compared to? I'm fixin to trade a bow for one. Is it alot like turkey loads?

Best way I can describe it is bad. Shooting it once its not so bad, more than one it starts to punish.

I have a one thats my elk rifle. Terrible recoil when shooting on paper my arm will tingle for awhile after I shoot. Once shot it about a dozen times in a day and couldnt lift my arm over my head the next day.

I do have to admit its never kicked a lick when Ive shot an elk with it.

depends on how the rifle is set up

my old one had a muzzle brake... not too bad on the shoulder but you better wear ear protection!

It sounds like your gun/scope setup doesn't fit you. Not saying they don't kick but yours sounds excessive.

I would compare the kick to an 8 gauge shotgun. If the gun is heavy enough, and padded enough, sure, I would shoot it!

Seriously, they do kick, and b/c of that they can be hard to sight in. If you are handy with a gun, a smaller gun like a 30-06 will work fine.

Just have a muzzle brake installed. It will be very manageable after that. I have a muzzle brake on my .300 WSM and it kicks about like a .243.

I have a 300 ultra mag and I'd assume the 300 weatherby would be a little lighter recoiling than that gun. The only time it's bothered me was when my shoulder was hurt to begin with. I do have a break on it and that helped out alot.....without it, it was a thumper for sure.

I would say it kicks about like a 270 with the break installed

Do your sighting in on a lead sled or equivalent that doesn't punish your body and ears. When you go hunting and see a critter you won't notice the recoil. It is not a plinker but I know lots of folks that shoot them and lets say that tracking is usually not an option afterwards.

                  Very simply, they kick hard!

Shooting at game isn't a big deal, but on a bench you really have to block it out.

I had a .300 Weatherby that was magnaported and I would say it was somewhere in between a .243 and .270.

Definately louder with any type of recoil reducer. You will clear out several seats on either side of you at a gun range when it starts roaring.

I'd say it is the perfect gun for Elk and it seems to like 180 grain bullets the best.

If you are concerned about the recoil you need to look at a smaller caliber. They do kick a good bit, depending on the individual gun of course.
But you still have to be accurate with it, doesn't matter what caliber it is.
I shoot a .300wsm in a very light weight Model 700 and I love it.
Trading more fire power for less accuracy is NEVER a good swap!

You might be right, I have no idea. Its a vanguard deluxe with the nice wood my wife ordered it for me on our first anniversary back some years ago.

Put a zeiss conquest on it due to its 4" of eye relief. I knew one thing that I didnt want my eye anywhere near the scope when the rifle goes off. I dont shoot paper with it anymore I know its on and only pull it out to kill something.

I know my Tikka t3 in 300 win mag is a pleasure to shoot compared to shooting my 300 wby.

As with any gun, hold it in tight and have a quality recoil pad (one that still is accurate to shoot but takes some punch out of it).

Mine has no pad. Ive thought about putting one on it but for as little as I shoot it I like to keep it original.

I installed a limbsaver recoil slip-on pad that really helps cushion the blow. Not for the faint of heart when you're sighting in. But as stated, once you're hunting, you don't notice it at all.

I curretly own two and would never consider using anything else. The recoil is just a price of the performance. In the past I have had 30-06's kick worse, but only you can decide for sure.
