    Replacing or Painting Vehicle Dashboard

Anyone every tried to refinish/paint a dash OR know if it can be done?

I have a 2003 Chevorlet that has an INFERIOR dash, that has went from paint flecking off in tiny eraser size bits to now having a spot about 5X5 (inches) peel off leaving a partial grey / partial black dash. Hardly "Chevy tough" and especially fustrating for a vehicle I am still making payments on. Venting over.......now how can I get it fixed?

Have you gone back to the dealer and inquired about it Gary?

Yes, with less than sterling feedback...ranging from
      1) No, we haven't experienced this problem on other vehicles....
      2) Did you put something bad on your dash.....
      3) Yes, that's not an uncommon problem....did you buy an extended warranty?

My truck still has the problem....looking for direction or assistance on how to solve (from painting options/choices to further assistance from Chevorlet).

I have a small chip out of my dash where the black is showing on my '03 Yukon.

Did you say the vehicle is only 4 years old and should still be under warranty? Have you considered one of those cloth dash covers to cover it up?

I've painted various interior pieces in the past using the paint made especially for the application. It looks great at first but it doesn't hold up very well. I did the dash on an 81 F250 and couldn't even get it back in without it scratching and flaking.

Coverlay makes molded dash covers that fit like the original without the hassle of replacing it.

I have watched them paint dashes and everything else on that show Unique Whips.

You might want to remove the dash first before you paint it

I had an 88' GMC dash painted, it turned out great. It can be done, but i'm not sure if the guy that did mine is still in business i'll check and see.

Yes you can paint your dash, the most important step before you do anything is to clean it with a wax and grease remover. If you dont and sand or paint over the top of some old contaminants such as Armarol, or any other dressing even if its dry you will get fisheyes. As far as doing any sanding to it use grey scotchbrite pad and some water in a spray bottle. If you have to featheredge any paint use a fine grit sand paper like 800 or 1000, with light pressure. You dont want to sand any of the texture out if you can help it. Then clean again, and mask it off and paint. I have had to redo a few dashes in the last few years because of the problem you are having.

My 03 is doing the same thing - mine is tan colored and black underneath

Really pissing me off - but it is mainly on the passenger side side, so not too much
