What can you tell me about metal detectors?

The camp at our lease is on one of the highest points in Callahan County - you can see forever in every direction. It's a natural lookout so there is no telling who might have camped there over the years. I've found a few items -old cartridges, a knife blade, part of a metal cup, a belt buckle, etc that from the little research I've done date back into the 1800's. I'm thinking that soldiers or buffalo hunters may have camped there back in the day. I want to spend some time sweeping the area with a metal detector to see what might turn up. I started looking into buying one and quickly realized there's more to it than I want to learn. (As a sidenote when I think metal detector I always think of a weird old retired guy down the street who roamed my neighborhood as a kid - bermuda shorts, black socks, wingtips, metal detector) Anyway, for those in the know - what would I have to spend for a unit that would work for some fairly shallow searching? (BTW the landowner said I could have anything I find)

I can tell you that the metal detectors at both Kennedy and LaGuardia air ports will detect a Copenhagen lid.

        Suggestion!!!

Try this website. Lots of info.

TreasureNet is the internet's largest community dedicated to Treasure Hunting: Metal Detecting, archaeology, north american indian artifacts, relic hunting, treasure caches, sunken treasures, shipwrecks, buried treasures, gold prospecting and more!

I bought a Minelab for work and it's much smarter than me.

Kellyco Metal Detectors has the perfect metal detector for you- whether you are a beginner or experienced. From Security to Hobby- Begin your search today!

I've got a Bounty Hunter (made in Texas) that works great but there are some other really popular brands out there. White might be at the top of the list but I am not sure that makes them the best within their price range.

Any basic metal detector will do about the same thing but discrimination is what sets them apart. The more expensive detectors will be more accurate on types of metals, more sensitive, etc.

Jerp I have a Minelab they are pricey but so are the White's when you get to the high end ones. I have had one for years and I'm not an old retired guy. It is just about like fishing or siting in your stand you never know what you might see. I have found all kinds of things old coins, rings, bullets, you name it. get a good one and learn how to use it. The more you use it the better you get and the more you will find. I can go to any house that was made before the fifty's or so and find silver coins. It is a blast. good luck and tell me how it goes.

I have a Garrett and a White. You can get a cheap entry level Garrett and it will find everything you want to find on a deer lease. The only reason to buy a more expensive machine is if you are searching a park, school or playground type areas with a lot of trash in the ground. I would hunt the pawn shops for a used unit. Look at the Garrett website. They are made in Garland and they are really good people to deal with and will take care of you. Just don't buy one from Radio Shack or Harbor Freight.

That's what facinates me about it - whenever I'm in the woods and come upon an old broken down houseplace I find myself thinking "sure would like to wander around here with a metal detector" I'm sure you find mostly junk but you never know...

The property we purchased a few years ago came with some documents detailing the history of the settlers who lived and camp near the creek that runs through the property...Some of the story is very interesting and has my curiosity up,,,so Ill be purchasing one myself...

The Garrett sounds interesting, since gettin it repaired would be close to home if needed..

I know mboltm's detector saved my butt when my bride lost the keys to our storage shed in the back yard. Without that detector, I would have had to wait until my lawnmower found them!

My mom went to a few meetings of a local metal detector club. Gave her a lot of good advice and the raffle ticket she bought actually won her a metal detector. The main advice she was given was stay away from the ones at Academy, Walmart, etc.

Garrets is a great detector either as a starter or experienced level. Use one for years before I got my Whites.

The Garrets is very user friendly. I've concidered going back to one. Like an earlier post said, it's smarter than I am.

Just remember, the more you spend the better the unit and the more it will find.
