    Speaking of "Old Bows"

Does anyone remeber Olympus Archery in Houston? Back in the day, my mother worked there as a secretary (early 70's). They were one of the early mfg. of compound bows.

They whole family got hooked on field archery and we traveled around Texas and beyond during the spring and summer going to weekend shooting events. Cut my teeth at Buffalo Field Archery in the 70's.

Anyway, here is my Dad's old target bow. My guess is that it was made before 75'. Aluminum frame with wooden limbs. Only has about 10% let-off. Boy how times have changed.

The Quinns are my very close friends. David Quinn is who invented the Olympus compound. It was the first metal handle compound and only the third compound manufacturer. (Allen invented it, then Jennings, then Olympus).

David makes the Quinn recurves now. I shoot a Quinn Stallion.

If you belonged to Buffalo in the 70s, what is your name?

Murphey - don't forget that Bill was David's business partner. but it was David that designed the bows. After Bill hit David, is when they split up and Bill bought out David. And then David & Peggy bought Hillcrest.

Shades of Tim & Earle at Viking

(I grew up in BufflaoFAC, from 1961)

so are Tim & Lannie Whiteford. So is Earle & Flo Bateman. But David is still living in Spring Branch. And Peggy died a couple of months ago.

This thread brings back memories. I shot quiet often at Buffalo FAC and Earl Bateman is the one that convinced me to shoot a compound after I borrowed his Bear Alaskan at a shoot ans scored the highest score on the second round that day. bought one the next week. More than likely at one time or another, we probably shot together or at least met. I shot out of College Station with the Brazos Valley Bowmen from 71 until I graduated in 75.

I remember the Quinn's. My name is Larry White. Erna and my mom were best friends for a long time. I am pretty sure they still stay in touch.

I know the picture doesn't do much justice( camera phone), but this bow doesn't have a scratch on it. Looks like it was made yesterday.

Capt Jack- Do you remember Donnie Turner or Mike Lindsey?

Used to go week nights to Hillcrest and watch as my parents shot in a weekly league. Lot's of memories of that place.

Great looking bow!! As others, brings back lots of great memories!! I have an old Allen that I take out and bet every once in awhile.
Speaking of Aluminum risers......... anyone seen a all aluminum recurve?? I have this one and have found NO information about it. The riser is made to shoot right or left handed!!

The whole Houston "archery family" was standing there shooting the Tueday night league at Viking the night that Tim came out and got in Earle's face - in front of all of us. We all stood there with our jaws hanging open.
(note: both Earle & Tim were both seargents in the Marine Corp) (and I used to be a seargent in the Army)
That's when Tim bought out Earle and Earle & Flo went and opened Archery Sports on 225 across from PasadenaHS.

                  > Earle Bateman

Larry - I talk to David almost every day.
I'm also still in touch with Earle & Flo Bateman, and Mike Palmer, and John Ford. And I even swap emails with Lannie Whiteford a few times a year. I don't try to stay in touch with Tim anymore.....

sure - the Turners were very strong in Buffalo. Vernon was past Prez, Francis was club Secretary forever, and Peggy Quinn was Treasurer.

The last time I saw Donnie was he was shooting at Viking on a league (the Turners lived less than a mile from Viking)

CJ, I never got into "freestyle" until I was out of college and shooting 3D's. I shot barebow up until about 77 or 78 and then went to sights and a release. I did shoot olympic style from 73 to 75 when John Williams (72 Gold Medal winner) enrolled in to A&M and they opened an archery class. Shot a few tournaments against other colleges and universities in Houston, CS and Austin. Never could get use to shooting with a clicker though.

If that is a pic of you back in the good ole days, then you do look familiar.

I remember all those names. Especially John Ford. My dad was really fond of him. I remember that killer Toyota Landcruiser he used to drive. If you ever talk to him, ask him if he remembers Fred White, my dad. He passed away 11 years ago.

I shot open freestyle as well. Looking at your pics, I think I was a few years behind you. I was between 10 and 15 for most of my archery shoots.
