I cut about a foot of old bicycle tire tube and use that for an arrow puller, pretty cheap option if you've got some lying around the house and it folds over nicely to be stuffed into a pocket for 3D shoots.
make sure your leg isnt behind the arrow when you are pulling it out. a nock to the shin hurts....allot....
One of my scariest bowhunting moments occurred because of something like this. I had an arrow go through the corner of my bag target and dig into the plywood backer I had behind it. So I had one foot against the bag and an arrow puller and both hands on the arrow. It had been a crappy day and I was taking the frustration out on the arrow. I yanked as hard as I could a couple of times. Then it came free. The arrow accelerated rapidly backward with the nock hitting the inside of my right thigh about half way up. I said a choice word and thought, ouch that is going to be a nasty bruise. My ex was standing there watching and laughing. Then she stopped laughing suddenly and I looked down. I noticed two things. First there was about a 1/4" hole in my jeans where the arrow had been. Second my jean leg was soaked.... and the blood was now running out onto my boot. All of this happened pretty darn quick. I dropped all my gear and put a palm on the wound to try and get some pressure on it. 30 seconds later found me jeanless laying in the bathroom floor in a pool of blood, light headed while my ex all but sat on my leg to get the bleeding stopped. My leg was sore for a few weeks, and I still have a scar.
You can imagine the force it took to drive the "dull" end of the arrow through my jeans and then a good bit into my leg. Be careful and when you are really having to put some force to one that is stuck make sure 100% of your body and other people are clear of the path should the arrow suddenly come free.
An arrow puller is worth its weight in gold, the soap helps. I give'em a half to full twist with moderate pressure, and once the target turns loose a little just pull them straight out. Certain target brands are significantly easier (Rhinehart) to pull from than others (McKenzie) in my experience.
Hurts even more with a broadhead (although not initially) Got a beautiful cut on the inside of my left thigh pulling out the arrow tipped with a Rocket Ultimate Steel BH
