I got pretty lucky I'm getting him for free, the guy wanted to breed his three year old chocolate lab before he had her fixed, the pups are full blood but dont have papers.

If the bloodline is there its basically a crap shoot. They are still puppies. I DONT LIKE agressive pups, and just me I look for the one that will leave the pack and go roam around and IS HUNTING....they dont know what, but they know they are looking for something.
Look for a happy puppy and of course not a timmid one. Check the mouth for a proper bite you want the dog to be able to hold a bird in its mouth (no over or under bites). Good Luck

Do either parent hunt? Do either parent even retrieve? If the answer is NO on either parent to either question a FREE dog might not be a "good deal" IF you are wanting a hunting dog.

"FREE"- no dog is free, it takes the same time, vet, feed, training, housing, hunting to raise a lap dog as a master retriever.

              Knowledge Knot

My Grandpa always told me to feel the knot on the back of a pups head. He said the larger the knot, the smarter the dog. Probably just an old wives tale but he swore by it.

That is a good start . When you go visit the litter, take a fresh bird wing and wipe it across the ground for several feet. Watch to see which pups react and how they react. If you get one or three that follow the scent to it's end, that can be a good thing too . If you see a pup that is wanting to play a lot/out going with others, that is a plus also. Just my $.02
