    Considering getting CHL but...

I just bought a new HG and am now considering getting a CHL but have a few questions.

    1) What is the approx total cost of getting the CHL (class, test, license, any yearly fee or anything else...)?

    2) I haven't looked real hard but seems to me there's a ton of places you can't carry. Where do you guys carry, that's legal? Where do you wish you could carry that's usually off limits?

3)Is it true that if you posses a CHL and are carrying you are responsible to "act" if you witness a crime? Like if some yahoo pulls a gun on an attendant it is your responsibility to assist with your HG? I don't think this is true but I have heard this before...

Any other help on making my decision to do or not this?

    Thanks!

State cost is $140. Other cost depends on the class. $75 seems to be cheapest for whole deal.

Other than that the class will answer all those other questions.

There is no responsibility to act, even to defend yourself if you don't wish to.

My opinion is why not get it and be able to carry if you chose to. One day something might come up and you might wish that you could carry legally just in case something happened.

False, but the class will cover that. Let LEO's deal with them.

I wished I could carry while on duty at work.

If you get pulled over in traffic, you probably wont get written up if you have a CHL.

              1) My class was $125 State cost $140 Renewal is every 3 years I think

              2) Main places not to carry would be state/federal buildings, places that sell alcohol, and schools.

              3) You are not obligated to act. The only time you are ALLOWED to use a weapon is when you "believe" yours or another's life is in danger.

#3 is tricky! You can get sucked into a legal circus. My advice: have a good lawyer!
The court can "turn" you into a hero or a "gun wielding vigilante."

                  1) $140 to state about $100 for the class. 5 years later, think it is $75 to the state and whatever the renew class charges. Repeat the renewal every 5 years.
2)Can carry a lot of places. Class will cover in detail. Keep in mind that in most cases you can carry in the parking lot, just not the building.
3)Only a leo on or off duty has an obligation to act. You are allowed to act if your life or someone elses is in immediate danger. Think it is generally not advised to be the hero. Especially if in a crowded place and you might injure or kill a bystander.

I don't think that LEO's have a duty to act off duty either. Many agencies (or most) don't even require them to carry a firearm off duty.

I"ll tell you what, if you decide you want to get your CHL and you have a weapon and plenty of ammo you can come out to my house and shoot all you want to prep yourself for the shooting portion, I will even toss in some pointers for free....

Don't know about other cities buy I can tell you that I've yet to see a 30.06 sign anywhere here. I make it a point to look for the 30.06 or 51% signs to make note of when I need to leave it in my car.

My biggest inconvenience is my son being in school sports. I hate, and I mean HATE, having to leave it in my truck. I need to get a safe box for those occasions.

The cops cant always be there. Protection starts with the individual.

i got pulled over a few weeks ago, handed the officer my lic and carry lic. he asked me where my firearm was, i told him my right hip. he proceeded to show me the problems he stopped me for:

no plate on my trailer,(got ripped off, hadnt replaced it at the time) no title for the trailer, no bill of sale to show ownership of the trailer, trailer lights not working(blown fuse and didnt know it.) no tarp/cover over the brush on the trailer, no tarp/cover over the brush in my bed.

5 possible tkts and the officer wrote them all up and showed WARNING beside each item. majority of officers appreciate a person that will defend themselves and supports their right to carry instead of waiting for the police to react.

1 and 2 are covered already.

3 should be answered by the same attorney you intend to have defend you if you ever draw your weapon. Are you prepared to hire one to answer your questions? I wouldn't take legal advice off the web (or from a CHL instructor for that matter)
