    Generator

Looking for a quiet generator approx. 4000 watts that is not as expensive as a honda or yamaha. Any thoughts or input appreciated.

I ended up with the Honda and it is quiet but before I bought it, I had checked into some of the ones that have the Honda engine but not the Honda pricetag. It might be an option for you to find one that has the Honda engine to save some money.

Try tractor supply, they carry a 4,000 watt champion for a little over $300. I use one for my 30 amp travel trailor and it carries everything without any problems.

I use the same one on my travel trailer. It is pretty darn quiet!

There are lots of good generators out there with out the tag...... but they aint Honda quiet. The motor is only a fraction of the noise, the generator itself makes the majority.

I had a Northern Star in one of my boats. GREAT generator, Honda motor but was no quieter than a briggs, or coleman.... which also make good generators

Kipor if you don't want to drop the coin for a Honda.

Just be careful depending on what you are using your generator on... many don't have
"clean" enough power to run certain electronic devices on, TVs, DVDs, Playstations, etc.
Find a good used Honda... I have a 6500w honda, and it's been well worth the $2200
I paid for it... especially during IKE...

There is a big reason that some generators are more expensive than others. The motors are one thing. There are motors and yes some Honda motors that run at 3600rpms. Then there are other motors that run at 1800rpms. The lower the RPMs the lower the noise. The exhaust system also cost money. A better exhaust system can be three times that of a piece of pipe. I have found any generator that has a Generiac winding on it is also a piece of junk. I have only been able to get around 3000hours out of these windings and that’s with maintenance on the stator bearings and brush rigging. Honda has a cheap line and a expensive line as do some other manufactures. If you want a 4KW generator for $400 then that’s what you will get. If you want a 4KW for $2000 then you will get a little more. The big thing is paying for what you want and use.

I have a Coleman powermate that is quieter than most others. It's 5000 so it doesn't have to work very hard to run one camper. I believe that's why it's quieter than the others at the lease. jmo

As the gentleman said, Tractor Supply Champion 3500 watt. It has a 30 amp RV plug, a 120-volt volt 15 amp plug, a 220-volt 20 amp plug and a 12-volt pulg for charging a battery in a pinch. It is quiet as they come and starts right up. If you use it for bowfishing, make sure it is full of oil as waves can set off the low oil shut-down sensor and the motor will die {it thinks it is out of oil}. i love mine and can buy 7 more for the same cast as a Honda {I paid $249 on sale}. i have had it about a year.

                        What he said....

An inverter type generator is much more quiet than a non-inverter.

I got lucky and found a 2000watt Honda at a garage sale. Got it for a steal. After hearing every generator in the neighborhood during Ike, I am glad this is what I ended up with. Whisper quiet, runs smooth, sips gas. My neighbors were running out of fuel for their 6500's long before gas was readily available. Don't by more power than you need. Bigger is NOT better in this case, if you want quiet. Save your coin, then find an inverter type.

What do you mean inverter type?

I have had good luck with Generac. Not real quiet but run forever.Used them for years bowfishing and even sunk the boat once with a 5000w in the bottom and drained oil,gas tank, carb. and blew the water out of the cylinder.Added new fluids and it cranked right up and believe it or not,Still put out power. and was working fine when I sold it with the boat about 2 years later.Honda's are the Cadillac's of generators though.

Spend the money on a good one, Honda,Kawasaki or Yamaha. They are quiet and will last forever and you will always be able to get parts for them.
