I knew Mr. Hughes my entire life. When I would come home on leave from the Army we would sit and talk for hours. I enjoyed listening to him talk about his days in the service and how things was back in the Old days.

Harry was born September 16, 1917, in Galveston, Texas. He attended Ball High School and then served his country in the Pacific as a member of the U S Army during World War II. Harry married his wife of 60 years, Vera Cecilia Hughes, on November 16, 1946, and spent his life working as a grocery store owner, farmer, and rancher, selling many a watermelon and cantaloupe on the side of the highway. Harry was an active member of his community, serving as a school board member for the Port Bolivar School; an original board member of the Port Bolivar Water District; a board member for Galveston College; and a volunteer firefighter with the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service. He was also a member of the Galveston Farm and Ranch Club, the Galveston Harmony Masonic Lodge #6 AF & AM; and the First Methodist Church of Port Bolivar.
