Anthrax is anaerobic bacteria (Bacillius anthracius) meaning it grows without oxygen. It is a Gram Positive Rod which means that when stained with Grams stain it has a purple color to it and is in the shape of a rod when looked at it under a microscope. It can cause anything from an open sore to a pulmonary infection of the lungs that can kill. It produces spores that can last several years in the soil. I'm a microbiologist by trade.

Art, you just took me back to pathomicro. Pulmonary anthrax is also called "wool sorters" disease. What makes it bad, is the pulmonary or GI anthrax infections because they are hard to diagnose until it's too late.
The spores can survive very harsh conditions and reamain "inactive" in the soil for years or decades until more favorable environmental conditions arise and intercellular signals tell the spores to develop.
Anthrax is everywhere, you can probably find it on your property. There's nothing you can do to get rid of it. The chances of getting infected by it are slim though. It is very rare.
